I walked through the dark halls of dauntless, my arms held behind my back with my fingers curled around them.
I was ordered to lead a group of fresh transfer initiates, straight from their old factions, and that's where I'm going.
I make it up to the roof, where all the initiates meet up for their greeting from dauntless: jumping.
As I expected, I hear the train horn blaring in the distance, getting closer with each second that went by.
Before I knew it the initiates started jumping off, stumbling and falling over, unlike some of the dauntless born who've been doing it their whole lives. I shake my head. This will be a hard group.
After what seems to be all of them, unincluding the ones who where to scared to exit the train the dauntless way, left to be factionless, I clear my throat to get their attention.
After the quiet chatter cieses, I speak.
"Hello, initiates. I'm Veronica, one of your dauntless leaders. If you want to be in dauntless, this is the way in." I say, gesturing behind me.
"If you don't have the guts to jump, you don't belong here. And there's no going back to your families, so you'll live factionless until your bodies rot." I add with a small smile, earning a few scared faces. Those faces should be left out of the compound where they belong.
"Is there something at the bottom?" An erudite girl asks, her erudite blood getting the best of her. That'll be changed soon I promise.
"I guess you'll just have to find out." I smirk. "Well someone's got to go first, who's it going to be?"
Murmurs were shared, until a male voice spoke up. "I will." He says bravely.
The boy walks to the front of the group, and my eyes widen a tad. He's a Abnegation transfer. The first in decades.
"Go ahead, stiff." I say, earning a glare from the boy.
I pat his back as I step down, and he finches in what seems like pain. I raise an eyebrow but soon shake it off as he gets ready to jump.
"Sometime today, initiate." I say. I was never the patient type, that was for Amity.
After everyone jumped, an Erudite kid came up to jump. He looked at me, as if he was waiting.
"Well?" I say, gesturing toward the ledge, growing a bit impatient.
"Only if you go with me." He says, cockily.
I blush quite a bit, but I hide it with a scowl. "What makes you think I'd do that?"
"Because I can tell you've been dying to jump off of this thing since we've gotten here." He replies. Damn his Erudite senses. Those people are superhuman.
"Fine." I reply, walking over to the ledge with the boy.
I step up with him, ready to jump, but he tries to grab my hand. "Don't get to cocky." I glare at him, jumping soon after.
I land on the net, along with the Erudite boy. I help myself and him out, then I stand with Max, one of the other leaders in dauntless.
"Eric, last jumper!" He calls out.
"Welcome to dauntless." I say as he walks by with a smug look on his face.
I step away from Max, and clear my throat, earning attention from the new dauntless members before me.
"I'm Veronica, as I told you before. I'm one of your dauntless leaders, as well as one of your instructors." I officially greet myself.
I split the dauntless born from the transfers, and I send the borns with Max, as I turn to the rest. There wasn't many transfers this year, but I'll treat them as any other group.
"Here in dauntless, we believe in ordinary acts of bravery." I start, but am interrupted by a small frail Amity girl.
"Like what?" She asks.
I walk to her, and tower over her.
"Dauntless isn't a kind, fluffy unicorn loving faction like Amity. This is serious. Dauntless believe in being brave, we believe that cowardness was one of the causes for humanity to crumble outside of our walls. And I would appreciate if you wouldn't interrupt me and question it, and keep your mouth shut. Understand?" I snap, and the girl nods quickly in fear.
I continue. "As I was saying, there are three stages to your training. Stage one is completely physical. You'll be doing things like shooting a gun, throwing knives at targets, and fighting each other in an area we've set out for you." Whispers were shared throughout the group.
"Stage two is emotional. You'll be put in a Sim like your aptitude test. We're going to see how you respond to fear. It's okay to be afraid, just don't show it and cower, like some of our members, that are no longer with us." No-one said anything.
"Stage three is mental. We'll be putting you in a different simulation, you'll be aware it is a simulation, but you'll be put once again face to face with your biggest fears in a different way. Understand?" Everyone nods.
"Alright. Let's get started."
* * * * *
I showed them the dormitory, where they'll be staying for the next 10 weeks, and waited them to get changed in the cafeteria, where we dauntless eat our everyday meals, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I took a sip of my coffee, and turned to the entrace, where the initiates started flooding in, in their dauntless attire. I smiled at the sight of them, then I turn and look down at my coffee.
They all started flooding the table where I sat, with their food in hand and chatter in their mouths.
I look up when I feel someone sit down next to me. And of course, to my surprise, it's the Erudite kid from earlier, who's name I know is Eric.
I look away from him and sip my coffee again, my eyes darting around the room, making sure everything is alright.
"You need to loosen up a bit, Mrs.Dauntless born. Dauntless isn't all serious." He says. This really got my attention. He had no idea of my past or present, for that matter.
"What makes you think you can talk to me like that, initiate? I'm a dauntless leader, you already know. And it is very serious. When I'm working everything is strict, including my attitude. I suggest you shut up now, Eric." I snap.
He just takes a sip of his coffee, looking away. I know what he's thinking, that I'm a total buzkill, but assure you I'm not.
Before another word was spoken, all of the dauntless members clashed their cups on the table. Max was here.
He hushed everyone from their clanging, and spoke.
"Hello Dauntless members!" He yells across the room. Everyone cheers in response and he smiles.
"I would like to announce the arrival of our new dauntless members! Welcome to dauntless!"
Everyone cheers and picks up the initiates, including me, and carried us throughout the crowd.
I smiled as the dauntless passed me around, cheering.
Under my tough, tattooed, skin, I do have feelings. And boy are they showing right now.
I'm happy.
