Chapter One - Missing

It was April the 1st when I heard it. I was in the car, lying in the driver’s seat, legs sprawled across the wheel, subconsciously bobbing my head up and down to the song playing. The radio quietened down as the last notes of the song played and an eerie silence filled the car, making me wonder what this was about. The delayed theme song for the celebrity gossip section plays, and the first news item was what really caught my attention.

"Demi Lovato has reportedly been..." the radio guy took a deep breath as if he was about to say 'Voldemort', "...missing."

''WHAT?” I shouted in disbelief, earning strange looks from the elderly couple passing by. I took a deep breath taking in the new piece of information, then slowly, an unsure laugh erupted. "Haha, I see what you did there..it’s April the 1st, April fools day. You almost got me for a second." I thought, whilst admiring my smartness. I was a bit of a fan and was only really convincing myself that was a prank because, let’s face it, that wasn't something to joke about.

My ears picked up on a muffled sound of voices.  Holly, my chirpy and well-liked friend, had finally finished, I quote, 'quickly buying bobby pins'. She was walking towards my direction, with a boy, that sort of dark, mysterious yet hot guy that you’d see on TV. He had cold blue eyes that seemed to wander everywhere, except at her. His hands were angrily shoved into his jean pockets, making me notice his arms. His arms. They were beautiful, well built and covered in a mixture of vivid black, inked tattoos. I wanted to trace my fingers over each tattoo and learn each meaning of these dark illustrations. A  pang of jealousy hit me when a small smile crept across his face, turning his attention Holly.

Looking back at my reflection in the rearview mirror, I wasn't that bad. My pale green eyes stared back at me, though nothing compared to Holly’s enchanting hazel eyes. My hair looked as average as ever, brown and sitting at the top of my head with flecks of blonde peeking out.. I’d much prefer long black curls, like Holly. I stopped halfway between my inspection; why was I doing this to myself? I had never been insecure, yet this one boy had the power to make me pick out my every flaw.

He was just Holly’s friend, he was just another boy. I tried to convince myself, but I still found myself constantly looking back  at him, then myself.  Holly eventually found her way back to my car, in a good mood of course.

“Hey Laurel, sorry I took that long.” She smiled, applying a new coat of lip gloss.

I shrugged, “I guess you've found a new friend?”

“Who?”

I looked back to see this mysterious boy again, but he had left.

She turned her attention towards my direction, “Oh, him.” She said, as if she had seen him.

“That’s Chase, he works at this tattoo parlour, I saw it while I bought the bobby pins. I figured I could just  look over at some of the designs, my birthday’s coming up.” She smiled.

Chase. The name suited him; dark, attractive, yet mysterious. I saw him again, in the corner of my eye, walking into some strange looking store. The sign was wrecked, dull grey paint peeling off the edges. I couldn't take my eyes off him though. I watched him until he disappeared into this store, his name still echoing through my mind.

Chase. The boy who was covered in tattoos that made me think about his past. Chase. The boy who had made me realise my flaws. Chase.

“Did you hear about Demi?” Holly asked, bringing me back to reality.

“Yeah, that was weird.” I replied, thinking about it again.

“I wonder what Niall thinks of all this?” She mentioned, putting her seatbelt on.

“Niall?” I asked. I knew Niall was in that boy band, One Direction, but what did he have to do with this?

“Yes, Niall. You really don’t know anything current, do you?” She sighed accusingly before carrying on. “Niall and Demi have recently been seen together loads. Obviously they have denied everything, but in mine, and everyone else’s opinion they look like more than friends.” Holly finished off, with a smug expression on her face.

“So what exactly does Niall have to do with this?” I asked, still unsure. I understood Niall would be upset, obviously. What I didn't completely get was that suggestive tone in her voice. Like Niall had a little more to do with this.

“I’m just saying, he’d be upset.” Holly repeated.

I shrugged, I was probably just overthinking it.

...

Once we arrived back home, I find my computer, logging onto my email.

“1 unread message” flashed across the screen. Opening the box, I read it over and over again till I decided it was real. The message read;

For the eyes of Laurel Monreau.

Below I have attached a new case.

Sincerely,
