My hair flapped in the wind as I buried my toes further into the sand. Tilting my face upwards, I tried to soak in the last of the sun’s rays. My eyes fluttered close as I tried to remember everything that had happened this summer. My hand held on tightly to my shoes as I began to walk towards the water.
“Meg!”
Whipping my head in the direction of the voice, my lips involuntarily curved into a grin. My heart fluttered, and heat rushed to my face. My hand reached up to play with a strand of my hair as he continued walking towards me. His eyes were trained on me. The wind blew his hair around as he finally halted right in front of me.
“Hi. I didn’t expect to see you here today.” He breathed out as he reached out to grab my hand.
Hi would have been the simple answer to say. The right answer to speak. But without thinking, the words tumbled out of my mouth. My bottom lip trembled as tears began to rush to my eyes.
“I-I-I’m going to miss you. Harry, I don’t want to leave.”
Startled by my reaction, he brought me closer. Wrapping his arms around my waist, he hugged me tight as I buried my head in his chest and fisted his t-shirt. His fingers ran through my hair as he tried to calm my silent sobs.
“Shh Meg. Meg look at me. Everything’s going to be okay.”
He place his hand under my chin and prompted me to look up at him. My hazel eyes met his green ones that were full of concern. His eyebrows were furrowed together as his lips were slightly pursed. Embarrassment washed over me as I looked away, how could I have let my emotion get the best of me.
This was never anything serious.
This didn’t mean anything to me...or too him.
Just a silly little summer fling.
“Meg, you okay?”
He shook me lightly, trying to regain my attention. My eyes flickered towards him as I reached up to tuck away a strand of his hair.
“Sorry. Ignore that.”
I sheepishly spoke as I looked back at him. A smile was spread across his face causing me to do the same. Leaning in, his lips pressed against my own. My eyes fluttered close as I enjoyed the moment. This would be the last kiss that we would ever share. His hands gripped onto me tighter, pressing me further against his chest as my arms wrapped around his neck and my fingers played with his hair. Pulling apart, our breathing was ragged. He planted another kiss on my forehead before speaking.
“How about we go get some ice cream? My treat.”
He flashed me a full smile, exposing his dimples as he tangled his fingers with mine. My mouth tugged into a frown as I had to pull our hands apart and shake my head. Confusion spread across his face as he tried to reach out for me but I put out my hand signaling him to stop.
“Harry. I’d love to but I can’t. I’m l-leaving soon.” Pulling out my phone, I looked at the time.
“I should be head home. I’m sorry”
Diverting my gaze back towards him, I saw the pain etched onto his face. This wasn’t the type of goodbye he had envisioned. His mouth began to form some type of word but before he could get them out, I interrupted him.
“I’m sorry, Harry. But this was just a nice little fling. Wasn’t it? Nothing serious. There was nothing between us. Nothing ever truly serious. So let’s not make this harder on each other. Okay? There won't be a we after this. I'm goign back to California. Remember?”
My heart clenched at every word I spoke. I wasn't speaking the truth. This wasn’t just some random adventure that I could just forget. I couldn’t deny that I felt deep feeling towards him. I didn’t want to leave him. I wanted there to be an us. I didn’t want to leave this. Sucking in my bottom lip, I spun around. I couldn’t stand seeing him like that in front of me. Broken.
“Goodbye Harry” I called weakly over my shoulder, jogging towards my car.
“Wait! Meg. No.”
I heard him call behind me. But it was too late. I was already in my car, pulling out of my parking space. Without glancing back, I drove off. Runing a shaking hand, through my hair, I tried to focus my full attention on the road.
I’ll miss you, Harry Styles. I won’t ever forget you.
