TWO: TEDDY
Sunday
It was late when dad and I left the house. Opal was already in bed. I didn't even get to say goodbye to her.
When we left the house, my hair was blue and yellow.
I was excited to be going on this trip with dad, but I was sad to have to leave Opal by herself.
I knew mom would be there with her but...
"So, Ted, I see you're excited," dad said as he backed up from the parking spot. He completely ignored my blue hairs. That was the bad thing about dad. He only focused on the things that would benefit him.
"Yeah," I replied. "Seems like it'll be fun."
"That's my boy!" Dad patted me on the back. His hair was only yellow.
The trip was to find a group of people who, as legend says, had escaped the CCP--the Colour Change Project. They hadn't agreed with the policies and believed that things would go wrong, so they hid.
They were right.
The project went wrong. They were supposed to drop the gas, and already had the moods written down, but some switched, so they have to reevaluate the moods. Some people even had side effects. My best friend, Pam, got put into a coma. She still hasn't woken up.
My hair turned blue, then started to turn red.
They should have tested the CCP more.
"We'll find them, son. Don't you worry. We'll find 'em, and we'll either wipe 'em out or convert them."
"W-what?" I glanced at the mirror and my hair was white. "Wipe them out? What did they ever do to us?"
Dad's hair was red and purple. "I told you to pay attention when I told you the details. They're dangerous, Ted."
My hair was red now. "How are they dangerous?"
"We can't trust them, Ted. They could deceive us and we would never know."
"It's the same with politicians, yet people still vote for them."
By now the truck was stopped and we were glaring at each other.
"Until you can prove to me that it's not worth letting them keep their freedom, I will still believe they are good people. They were right, after all."
Dad huffed. I turned on the radio and stared out the window.
A new discovery has been made relating to the CCP. Doctor Joy Sanders and Fred Terry have discovered that purple is annoyance.
'It took many months,' says Sanders. 'We tested rats and humans, along with cats, dogs, and birds.'
'We put them through a variety of temper challenging tests,' says Terry. 'We noticed the colour usually turned from purple to red when the subjects were put in a test where we placed a ball just in front of them and had them stand in one spot without moving. A couple of the test subjects lashed out after having purple hair. We assumed—'
"We don't need to hear any more of that," dad said gruffly. He didn't really like how the announcers and interviewers talked on and on. He turned to a different channel and music started playing.
I turned it up and he smacked my hand, then turned it back down.
"From now on, the driver controls the radio," he said to me.
"Fine."
The rest of the way to an available bathroom we spent in silence. He glared at the road, I glared at the ground outside the window, occasionally glancing at his hair colour. It went from red to purple, to nothing.
When we arrived in a town I didn't know the name of, dad stopped to get gas and I popped into the washroom, exiting the store afterwards with a bag of chips for the way.
We both got back in the truck and began driving again.
We were headed to a remote place in which the nearest town was 50 kilometres away. This helped with isolation, I suppose. It was quite a ways from home, and I was starting to rethink my decision.
I didn't want to have to eliminate the Resistors, but I might be their only chance to escape elimination and keep their freedom of choice.
We would just have to learn to trust them.
The music stopped playing and another announcer came on.
So, Barry, we've been having questions about the CCP. What is the purpose of it?
Well, we created the CCP to establish a more trustworthy civilization. A person will always know what another is feeling, and that is what we strived for with the project.
"Those darn reporters," grumbled dad. "Ruining a music channel..."
Monday
After we had been driving all day, I wondered what Opal was doing at home. It was getting dark, and I wondered if dad was getting tired.
My hair was brown. I didn't know what it meant, but it doesn't mater anyway at the moment. The scientists will figure it out. They always do.
Of course, sometimes they make mistakes.
And sometimes those mistakes affect the loved ones of others.
I thought of Pam and clenched my fist.
It was their fault.
"Look, Ted, the sun is setting. Just in time too. Here we are, at the hotel."
Dad parked the truck in the parking lot and we went inside the hotel. The clerk seemed bored. We were given a room in which we would stay the night. I took this as an opportunity to ask about how we would stay in touch with Mom and Opal.
"Dad," I asked, "can I call mom and Opal?"
He looked at me skeptically. His hair was black. "Why?"
I shrugged. "I miss them. And I'm sure they'd like to know we made it to the hotel safely."
He grunted.
"Is that a yes or a no?"
He sighed. "I guess so. But don't tell them the mission. It's supposed to stay top secret."
Victoriously, I grabbed the wall phone and dialled the number of my house. It rang a couple times before mom answered it. I was hoping to talk to Opal, but as soon as I saw the time, I knew she was already in bed.
"Hello?" mom's voice came over the line.
"Hey mom. Just calling to say we made it safely."
"Oh good."
"Yup. Could you say hi to Opal for me? It's late and I'm tired."
"Of course. Goodnight Teddy."
"Night."
I then handed the phone to dad, who had also wanted to talk to mom, then climbed into the bed.
