Chapter Three

A week had passed since Elle had visited the coffee shop. They had finished decorating their new flat, and they both thought that it looked pretty nice. Elle finally got the room that she had wanted after all those years of begging her mum for decorations. School started in less than a week, and it was time for Elle and her mum to go shopping for back to school supplies.

Elle had been enrolled by her mum in a prep school in London. She was going to be in Year 10, and she was fourteen years old, nearly fifteen. Although, her mother always thought that she had an old soul. She had been so mature at such a young age that most people thought she was older.

That particular morning, Mrs. Parker woke up her daughter at eight o'clock on the dot. And Elle was fairly annoyed by that.

"Wake up, love. We have to go shopping today." Mrs. Parker told Elle, shaking her a bit.

"Mmph." Elle groaned, shoving her face into her pillow.

"Come on. I have breakfast ready. I made you a smoothie. I know how much you love smoothies." Mrs. Parker tried to tempt her daughter.

"Mum, let me sleep. It's summer." she said, twisting her body around under the covers.

Mrs. Parker sighed, "School is starting in less than a week, and you don't have any supplies yet."

"Can't you just go out and buy it for me?" Elle asked, lying on her back now, more awake. She turned her head sideways to look at her mother with pleading eyes.

"No, because if I buy you stuff, then you're going to hate it. So you may as well come with me." her mum explained.

"Oh, alright." she finally agreed, sitting up in her bed.

After sorting out her hair and her face, she got dressed into a grey short sleeved crop top, black high waisted skinny jeans, her black combat boots, and she put a gold arrow necklace around her neck. She grabbed a red flannel from her wardrobe, and she tied it around her waist. Finally, she took her backpack that was lying on the ground, and she slung it over her shoulders. She looked at herself from every angle in her full length mirror until she decided that she was satisfied with how she looked.

She hopped down the stairs to find her mother waiting for her in the kitchen.

"It took you long enough. Do you want some?" Her mother asked, gesturing towards the smoothie that was still in the blender on the counter.

"Yes please." Elle said, and her mum poured her a glass of the berry smoothie.

"Is it okay?" her mum asked.

"Yes, thank you." Elle smiled, taking a sip.

"I made a list of things to get at the store. I have it on my phone." her mum told her.

"Okay."

"Once you're finished, we can go."

"I'm finished."

"You barely had anything."

"I'm not really that hungry."

"Okay." Her mum said, looking at her skeptically.

They left the flat, and they headed towards the store in Mrs. Parker's car. It took them about twenty minutes to get there, as there was a lot of traffic that day.

"What about these?" Mrs. Parker asked, holding up two pink folders.

"No, I want all black and white. I told you this before. Aesthetic, mum, aesthetic." Elle joked, taking the pink folders from her mother and putting them back on the shelf.

"I don't think you understand what that word means." her mum mumbled to herself.

They ended up buying everything black and white, and Elle was so happy when she looked into her bag. How tumblr of her.

When they got settled into their car, Mrs. Parker decided that she wanted some coffee.

"Do you want to get some coffee or something?" she asked.

"Uh, yeah, sure. We can go to that place that I found last week." Elle suggested.

Mrs. Parker agreed, and with the help of Elle's decent navigation skills, they found the coffee shop in no time. Mrs. Parker was somehow able to parallel park even though she wasn't an expert, and they entered the coffee shop.

The door chimed as they walked in, like it did when Elle came there before. Elle would order a chai tea latte as she did when she came there before, and her mum would order an iced coffee with two sugars and extra cream. They liked to stick to routines.

This time, there was no line, and they walked straight up to the barista who was cleaning the counter.

When he looked up, Elle immediately recognized his face, and she looked down at her feet, suddenly shy.

"Hi, what can I get you?" he asked; his voice wasn't very British to be honest.

"Can I get an iced coffee with two sugars and extra cream?" her mum asked.

"Yeah, and you?" he looked towards Elle, his eyes widening slightly when he realized who she was.

"A chai tea latte please." Elle practically whispered, but he heard it anyway.

"Coming right up." he said.

She didn't know the boy's name, but she was definitely interested in finding out. He seemed almost as shy as she was which was strange for a boy at this age. Most boys were cocky and rude almost, but he just seemed shy. She wanted to talk to him more, but her mother was with her, and it didn't seem like the correct time to do that. She would have to come again another time.

"Here you go." He said, glancing over at Elle, smiling slightly. "That's three pounds please."

"Thank you." Mrs. Parker said, handing him the money.

"That's alright." he said.

At that particular moment, it occurred to Elle that most employees at most work places wore name tags. She glanced down at his chest, and she found what she was looking for. Brooklyn is what the name tag said. Brooklyn was a nice name. Although, she had never heard it as a name for a person before. Brooklyn is the name of a city in New York. It seemed odd.

Elle smiled at him as a way to say, 'thank you.' He returned it. When they exited the coffee shop, Elle could feel his eyes on her again. It gave her a sense of confidence.

"He was cute." her mother commented once they were in the car.

"Mum." Elle said, embarrassed.

"What? I could see him looking at you, you know." she told her.

"He definitely wasn't looking at me." Elle denied.

"Stop pretending like you don't know what I'm talking about. You know he was."

"Whatever...It's not like anything is gonna happen. He doesn't even know who I am." she said.

"And I didn't know who your father was before I met him. Nobody knows anyone before they meet them. We were all strangers to each other at some point." her mum explained.

"Oh my god, mum. Just leave me alone. I don't want to talk about it."

But that was the biggest lie that she had ever told. She wanted to talk and talk and talk about it because she knew that he was looking at her. And most boys didn't take any interest in her at all which was why it was so shocking and amazing all at the same time. She wanted to see him again.
