Hello and thank you all for the reads, votes and comments! I'd like to say that it means a lot to me people are willing to read this guide and listen to all of the tips I use to make my own oc's. Hopefully you find it helpful.

So when I create my oc's the biggest thing I try to avoid is making a Mary Sue or Marty Stu. To me, it doesn't matter if it's something I will post later or if it's something I'm writing just for fun, if the character turns out to be 'perfect' I will scrap it and start over. Don't even get me started on this again, haha.

I'm not saying if you have a Mary Sue or Marty Stu you should start over, I'm just saying that there is always room for improvement for any oc.

The past is a huge part of making any oc, it determines how they act in any situation and how they interact with other characters. So you could say that personality and past both fit together tightly. Now of course they fit together but personality can also change a bit over the course of their life/your story.

For tragic backstories:

We've all probably read a story where the main character had a tragic backstory that all the others felt bad for. And was it annoying? Probably. Why? Because sometimes past can quickly determine if your oc is a Mary Sue or Marty Stu. It's really about how your oc acts about it and how the others act about it.

Does that sound confusing? Well, this can be done right. For example, JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter Series, portrayed her main character in a great way. Yes, Harry had a tragic past, yes, people did feel bad for him. But, Harry didn't go about his day only talking about his past and making others feel bad for him. It's not that your character can't think about their tragic past but when they go about only thinking about that and obsessing and making others feel bad for them is when it gets a little much.

Since this fits right in with personality, think of how your character would react to such a tragic event in their life and there you go.

When creating a tragic past, personally I'd try to not stick to cliches. Although I'm pretty sure we've also used cliches. It just happens sometimes.

So go ahead and do what you need to do to make yourself happy with your oc's past, in the end it doesn't matter to anyone but you.

Tips for any backstory:

-Make sure their past fits with with the universe they're living in.

-Think of as many details as possible that would make them who they are today.

-Make sure to remember supporting characters whether it be siblings, parents, relatives, friends, ect.

-Think about your own life or someone else's. Is there things you'd like to incorporate from your life?

-Think about events everyone goes through. Did they celebrate birthdays? Holidays? How?

-Did they have siblings? What were their parents like?

-When did they have their first date? First kiss? First crush?

-What were they like as a child?

There are so many questions you could ask about your character. Feel free to use the ones from above if you want. Looking for more? Search google for character developing questions or something similar.

Making pasts can be intimidating especially if you have an older character because it covers more time. But, when you brake it down to ages it really helps. Even just putting their "landmarks."

Hopefully this actually helps, it's not too long but hopefully it was good enough to help.

Remember if you have any more questions about creating a great past don't be shy, comment them below and I will try my best to answer them as best as I can in this chapter. If you have questions in general about oc's comment and I will answer them the best I can in the comments.

Before I go I'd just like to say again thank you so much for 1.3k reads! Last time I checked it was at like 500! I don't know how in the world it gained so fast but either way thank you so much!

See you next update with how to make your oc unique!

Adios!
