Linje Rivers, attorney at law, has always cared deeply about the plight of the homeless. Throughout his life, he's volunteered in many capacities that helped people with little or no income. From his time with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program to his current work at the Legal Aid Foundation of his native Tallahassee, Linje Rivers takes action when he sees a need.

Homelessness is a huge problem, even in a prosperous country like the United States of America. 3.5 million people per year experience homelessness due to one cause or another. 25% of those homeless are children under the age of 18. Though the problem is widespread, it doesn't mean there's nothing an individual can do to bring about change. Change can happen, on a large scale and on an individual level.

One mistake that many people make is assuming that all homeless people are homeless due to drug or alcohol problems. The reality is, that many different things can cause homelessness. From the unexpected loss of a job, mental illness, disability, or runaway children. Once you begin to see the homeless as individuals with various reasons behind their present circumstances, you can better help them without passing judgment on them.

There are many ways to help the homeless on an individual level. For example, carry a few bags with you containing practical things such as granola bars, soap, socks, toothbrushes and other things that people who don't have homes may not have. This is also a great way to help besides giving money, if you are concerned that they may spend any money you give them on alcohol or drugs.

Carry a list of local homeless shelters with you to hand out to any homeless you may come across, so they know there are places they can go for a warm meal and a place to sleep. You can also help the homeless by donating money or your time to these shelters so they can continue to help people who are down and out. You can donate clothing, toys or food to a homeless shelter to give to those who need them. Children who are homeless often do not have access to the things other children do. The simple pleasure of a toy can make a world of difference to a homeless child.

Linje Rivers hopes to represent indigent people as part of his volunteer efforts, helping those who cannot help themselves. If everyone in America took on a proactive role in helping the homeless get back on their feet, the impact would be astronomical.
