 Prologue

The snow twirled and danced over the vast, grey sky before finally settling on a tall wall, in layers of white. No human had set foot near that wall in decades. It had no cameras, no barbed wire, no electric fences but an almost tangible aura of fear and mystery which had successfully kept people from climbing over it in years.

A helicopter’s spokes churned the air, unknowingly changing the course of the falling flakes. It was ready to take off.

A small girl clutched her woolen hat to her head, for it was threatened to be blown off by a gust of the blistering wind, the type only found in winter. She turned to the boy beside her and tried to make her voice heard over the sound of the helicopter.

“I’ll see you in no time.” Klara called, her breath hanging in the air in a white mist.

Klara wasn’t that upset considering she was leaving her only childhood friend. After all, she was five and didn’t completely understand the concept of leaving. Besides, her mother had reminded her it would only be 4 weeks before she would see her friend again. It’s funny how easily children can be manipulated into believing anything.

Sebby nodded and wrung his hands together. Seb wasn’t good at goodbyes, Klara tried not to let that bother her. She knew the brave face he was putting on was fake. Through the smile, she could see the crinkle between his brows showing that he was upset. She could read him like a book. So, she attempted to change the subject.

“When you come, I’ll get you the shiny knight toy you want.” She said smiling. “It can be your birthday present.”

He nodded again and then suddenly seemed to remember something. He reached into his pocket of his blue anorak and pulled out a present. He had obviously wrapped it himself; the paper was all scrunched up and it was almost completely covered in sticky tape. Klara frowned wondering how she would open it; it looked like she’d need scissors.

“Happy Birthday!” He said holding out the present.

Klara took the present and began to peel off the tape.

The door to the helicopter slid open and a middle aged lady climbed out and landed on the white, powdered grass.

Klara, noticing this, began to unwrap her present faster.

The lady walked across the snowy lawn.

Klara removed another couple of pieces of sticky tape and scrunched them up into a ball.

Sebby hadn’t noticed the woman as he was too absorbed in watching Klara open the present.

Upon reaching them, the woman placed her hand on Klara’s shoulders.

“Klara Pickett?” The woman asked with a stern expression on her face.

Klara nodded in confirmation.

“Time to go.”

The lady began to lead Klara towards the helicopter.

“Wait,” Sebby shouted “Klara!”

Klara pulled herself out of the lady’s grasp.

“Can I at least say goodbye to Sebby?” She asked, puckering her lips.
