Chapter 8
When I got to Macs' that night Kyla was already taking orders. She gave me a quick wave when I walked in the door. I had Landon's diaper bag slung over one arm and my purse slung over the other. I held Landon down low in hopes that Mac wouldn't see him.
"Piper." Oh shit! I had just made it to the break room when I heard him call out my name.
"Hey Mac. How's it goin'?" I tried to play it cool, maybe if I acted like nothing was wrong he wouldn't notice Landon sitting in the carrier I held near my hip.
No such luck, "You know we have a strict no baby at the work place policy. What's going on? Whose kid is this?"
"Its a doll for this dumb health project I have. My partner bailed on me, so I got stuck with it. I'm really sorry Mac." I put my bag in the locker and closed it.
"Just make sure it doesn't disturb anyone. The dinner rush is going to start soon, so get out there." He waved me off.
"Will do chief." I saluted him and he laughed.
Mac Brown was an older man in his early 50's. He was also Kyla's second cousin on her moms side. When he heard we were looking for jobs he gave us the hook up. He was really laid back and had a great sense on humor. His blond hair was thinning and he had a bit of a gut, but his brown eyes still shone with humor and life.
I decided to bring Landon out to the main area until it started to fill up, then I would bring him back in the break room till my shift ended.
"You brought it with you?" Kyla asked as I came out after tying my apron on.
"I didn't have much of a choice now did I? He cried all the way over here. I fed him and changed him so I hope that means it will be a while before he cries again."
"So did you see him after school?" She asked.
"Yeah, but he was leaving so we didn't talk. I still have all his shit in my house though, so he's going to have to come get it at some point."
"After you left he just sorta looked after you. Then he didn't say anything for the rest of lunch. You both annoy the crap out of each other. It's so cute!"
"Cute? Are you insane, I hate him and he hates me! How in the world is that cute?" I demanded, I mean had she lost her mind?
"Just admit that you like him. I mean you don't have to lie to me or try to hide it, you can just tell me straight up. I don't judge!"
"Kyla, let me explain this to you in the easiest way I know how. I don't like him and I'm never going to! Get that through your head right now!"
"Sooner or later you'll stop fighting it and you'll realize how much you like him. And when you come to that conclusion I'll be here to gloat and rub it in your face!"
"Yeah sure. Now lets get back to work."
Kyla finally let it drop after that and we went back to taking orders and wiping down tables.
************
A half hour later Landon began to cry, the diner was filling up so I decided to bring him into the back. Once I was done changing him I came out to find Kyla talking to Oliver at the counter. His friend Drew next to him.
I took one more order before I made my way over to them.
"Where's your friend?" I asked them as I handed the order over to Jim the cook.
"He's with Wes. He had something to do tonight." Drew answered. I gave a sharp nod, still pissed he didn't think to inform me of his plans ahead of time.
