"Flight JS9891, boarding now at gate 6" a loud muffled voice engulfed my ears as I waited patiently in the confined line of slouching businessmen. My first time going to London and my first flight alone. The time always seemed to slow down when I had to wait in line. Mum and dad never really supported me when I told them I was going to London for college. I knew ever since I was young that's what I wanted to do. London was so beautiful and everything about it was so enchanting and mysterious. Studying over there seemed like the best option, since I could travel and get a degree at the same time.
I edged forward in the line and eventually got closer and closer to the planes door. I planned out my whole plane ride and what I would do to keep myself occupied for 12 hours. I always planned things, it's just the way I was and I would always deny I inherited it from my controlling mother.
After being seated and comfortably placing my baggage below my feet I sighed deeply and anxiously waiting for takeoff. Before the nerves took over my senses I decided to take out my notebook and make a list of things I needed to do when I landed. That's one thing I was always good at, heck I even made lists about making lists.
Soon enough I became calm and the plane took off into the late city lights of New York. I had lived in the big city since I was born and I loved every second of it. I always wanted to travel and I had saved every penny since I was 10 to be in the position to do so. Throughout the first hour I looked through the college catalogue over and over just imagining what walking around campus will be like. I was really tired and my eyes seemed to close all by themselves in the middle of the movie I had been watching.
"20 minutes until landing ladies and gentlemen" a chirpy woman had just announced on loud speaker. I allowed my eyes to adjust to the light from the window and quickly closed it as a headache formed in the back of my eyes. When the plane started to land, my nerves turned into excitement as I got off the plane and awaited my future.
The whole airport threw me off as I exited the gate and the cold air shocked me. I knew it would be cold but it wasn't until I experienced a tingling shiver up my spine that I knew buying multiple jackets would be at the top of my list.
After going through customs, I turned my phone off airplane mode and sat down in a small cafe. I went through my notifications on Facebook and took the time to update a status. The crisp air still bothered me so I bought a warm latte which strengthened my hoarse throat.
After crossing, "arrived safely in London" off my list I gathered my suitcase and latte, rushing to a souvenir shop. All the small mugs with the countries flag and English sweets on the shelves really made what was happening more real. It hadn't really sunk in that I was in London. I picked up a scarf and gloves, knowing rummaging through my suit case would be tiring, and reached the counter to make my purchase. I felt vulnerable walking through the airport alone but fondly enough, the anxious feeling in my chest faded away as I reached the doors.
I caught a taxi to the college which in traffic almost took an hour. I sat back and took everything in, the next thing more intriguing than the last. Everything about London was so fascinating and beautiful.
"40 pounds" the angry driver insisted after pulling up infront of The University of London. I knew I got a bad driver as soon as he pulled up in front of the airport.I sighed deeply not letting the rude mans attitude get in my way of having an amazing first day. I handed him the only money I had (that was in pounds and not dollars) and got my bags out the trunk. Luckily being from New York his temper didn't effect me much. I mean in New York, rude is its own language.
After he drove off I was buzzing on the inside, desperate to start my college experience. I wasn't very popular in high school, I had a nice small group of friends but nothing out of the ordinary . I was excited to start a new life after my toxic relationship ended back in New York. Liam was such a sweet guy, but he changed in senior year, therefore our relationship crumbling right in front of our feet. It really sucks how someone can change so much, especially when it happens right in front of you.
