Shadowfax ducked as the Hydra agent fired off two more shots at her. They missed, vaporizing the clearance rack instantly. Shadowfax winced at the loss of a pair of camouflage capris.
Pulling a gaping shopper to the ground with her as she ducked behind an overturned table, she activated her comm. Tony picked up the line.
"What's up?" He asked, Banner cursing in the background as he dropped something on his foot. Another shot fizzled past her ear.
"Hydra," she breathed.
"AGAIN?!" Tony bellowed, almost blowing out her eardrums. He and Nutsy really were alike.
Another shot. This one singed off a hair. Shadowfax growled. "Yeah, and they won't SOD OFF WHEN I'M ON THE BLOODY PHONE," she bellowed, the last part directed at the Hydra agents.
Tony cursed colorfully, and she heard Bruce's yelp of surprise. Natasha could be heard cursing in Russian as she loaded her guns. The spy grabbed the mike from Tony. "Hold tight. I'm on my way," she growled. With that, the link went dead and Shadowfax was left to fend for herself.
Setting her jaw, she rolled her shoulders and leapt out from behind the table. Her daggers flashed out from their sheathes, and her eyes glowed.
Red tendrils of energy snaked around the agent's guns, crushing them instantly. As three other men converged on her, she melted into the shadows. Re-emerging behind them, she loosed three of her belladonna-covered throwing knives into their backs. They went down, their limp forms spasming.
She smirked. Whipping around, she found another squad waiting for her. Their leader now advanced on her, leveling his gun. "Come with us now, and the Professor may be lenient."
Shadowfax threw her head back in a laugh, then sprang at the man. Grabbing his shirt, she shadowed him into a wall, leaning into his face.
"I didn't know Hydra was training comedians," she snarled. "The Professor? Lenient? What kind of daft idiot do you think I am, mate? Go to the blazes." With that, she drove her dagger into his gut, wrenching it.
With a gasp, the light faded the man's eyes, and he slumped to the ground, dead. A bloodthirsty grin on her face, Shadowfax ran at the rest of the agents.
Flipping over their heads, she turned and launched her throwing knives at them. Sidestepping the return fire, she snarled as a shot singed the silver armor on her shoulder. Leaping onto the shoulders of a soldier, she wrapped her legs around his neck and twisted. His neck snapped with a sickening crack.
She took the next man out by jabbing the pommel of her hand into his jugular gland, hard enough to kill him. Her eyes flared as the barrel of the next man's gun exploded in a red light.
Shrugging, he pulled out a wicked - looking rod. It crackled with electricity as he lunged, and Shadowfax cried out as it landed, frying her stitches.
"Mate," she hissed, "You're getting to be a real pain in the arse." She lunged faster than anyone could react, arcing her daggers in an 'X' over his neck. He sank to his knees, dead.
As Shadowfax spun to face her next opponent, she found there was no one left. A shuddering laugh escaped her mouth, and she picked a throwing knife out of the wall, replacing it in her leg sheath.
As she reached out to help a woman up from her place on the ground though, the woman cringed as turned away. Looking down at her hand, Shadowfax saw it was covered in blood. Biting her lip, she held her hands closer to her chest. Ignoring everyone else, she pushed her way out the door.
Her hand drifted down to the wound in her side as her stitches pulled open yet again. People stared as she walked past them, a few whipping out their phones to call the police or take videos.
As her vision steadily grew more blurry, she mustered enough strength to shadow into an alley two blocks away. It was one of her many storage locations; each one stocked with a fresh change of clothes. She quickly changed out of her outfit, resuming the identity of Jade. Her communicator 'blipped' in her ear as the tracking device activated itself.
"Come on Nat," she murmured. Jade ripped one of her spare t-shirts in half, tying it around her bleeding waist. She froze as she finished knotting it into place, sensing another presence in the hall. Jade whirled, eyes flashing as a pipe exploded beside her pursuer's head.
Loki grimaced, raising his eyebrow at her poor marksmanship. "Close," he offered.
"I was aiming for your head," Jade snapped, her vision going sideways. Loki scoffed, eyeing her with interest. His lip curled at the blood seeping from her wound. He kneeled down beside her.
"You may have wanted to aim slightly to the left, then," Loki advised. He held up three fingers, waving them in front of her face. "How many of me do you see?"
"All six of you look bloody stupid to me," Jade slurred. Her head lolled sideways, her shoulders slumping. Loki looked to the sky, as if asking Odin: 'Why do you hate me?'
Picking the girl up bridal style, he turned towards the mouth of the alleyway. Natasha Romanoff leveled her gun with his head.
"Put. Her. Down," she growled. Loki rolled his eyes. "Tell Thor I'll be waiting. And, no, I'm not dead."
Mock saluting her, Loki vanished.
Natasha yelled furiously, shooting a spot on the wall until the brick crumbled slightly. It wasn't one of her proudest moments.
...
Jade shifted on the mattress, snuggling deeper into the blanket wrapped around her shoulders. Her eyes shot open as she realized she never went to bed. She sat up fast, falling back onto the bed with a sharp gasp as pain rippled across her side. "Bloody h-"
"Language," Loki chided. Pulling a chair up beside her, he scrutinized her wounds. Focusing, his eyes narrowed as he held out his hands, and a warm light encased the injury. Jade sighed, relaxing slightly. "Ah."
Her gaze met his lazily. "Why are you helping me out here, mate?" Her head tilted to the side.
"I need my brother, but he's hardly going to listen to me if I don't have any leverage, hmm?" Loki retorted.
Jade nodded solemnly. "I'm not complaining, then," she admitted. She settled back onto the pillows, sighing. She soon drifted back into an easy sleep.
A/N So...TWO IN A FEW DAYS! WHO'S THE BOSS NOW, HUH? Just kidding, I'm way more humble than that...usually. Hehe. Hope you liked to the chapter!
