A voice to love

Chapter 3 - Hyun-mi

Me and Kate wrapped up the recording of the songs and started editing them. It took us about two hours to finally get the editing done, but we were quite pleased with the results.

"Well, lets submit them" Kate said smiling. I nodded and watched Kate upload the files. Right after that we got to the webpage that showed the other participants . We decided to watch a few entries.
We came along a guy who had one of the most soothing voices I had heard in a long time. It was really refreshing to hear that.

"If he doesn't make it through as well, I won't make it either" I softly spoke. "Nonsense! You will" Kate said as she pressed on the clip of girl. It seemed like it was a rapvideo. The moment she started I was blown away, she was so insanely good at it I almost dropped off my chair.

"I think it's time we stop watching, I get more and more nervous watching those other videos" as I looked over at Kate who nodded silently.

"Hyun-mi?" Kate mom asked as she peeked through the door. "Your grandmother called, she wanted to know when you're coming home." "I'll go home soon" I said. "I'll tell her that" she smiled and went down stairs.

"Well better make my way home I'd guess" I said and looked at Kate. She nodded and helped me gather my stuff. We both walked downstairs and bid each other goodnight.

I walked down the streets the streetlights twinkling in the night sky. I walked passed the park and saw a guy staring at the stars. I look at the guy and something tells me there is something familiar about him. God, I swear I've seen that guy before, but I don't know where. I catch him looking back at me and I start blushing. Shit he probably saw me staring at him. When I hear him calling 'Miss' I run straight home. Huffing I stand in front of the front yard. I open up the front gate and open the front door.

"I'm home!" I call when I enter. I hear my grandmother entering the hallway "hi sweety, how was your day?" she asks. "Pretty nice" I smile at her. "That's great" she says and takes over a few things I'm holding on my arms.
"I'll put these away, you go get ready for bed" she says.
"Aye" and I go upstairs.

I go to the bathroom and hop into the shower. I think about the guy I just saw, where do I know him from? O well, it doesn't matter, I'll find out one day. After showering I clean the shower and put on my pj's. I brush my teeth and walk back to my room.

I decide that I'll put my outfit together for tomorrow. I go for skinny jeans, a simple blouse with loafers. I look in to my wardrobe and pick up the little box. In it is a lovely leather watch, which used to be my moms and it was gifted by my dad. I put it down on my desk

The door of my room softly opens and my grandmother walks in. "That looks lovely, dear" she says eyeing the clothing I chose for tomorrow. She picks up the leather watch and looks at it tenderly.

"Grandmother, what kind of man was my dad like?" I asked. My grandmother smiles and gestures to sit down on my bed.
"Your father..." she sighed. "he was special."
"Special as in?"
"He sometimes looked unearthy, he really looked like a 'greek god' from time to time" my grandmother said laughing.
"A 'greek god'?" I asked her.
"Yes, he was born in the US although his roots are in Greece."
"He loved your mother very, very much, Hyun-mi" she said looking at me "we still have no clue where he went or why he left."

I see my grandmother being in lost in thoughts. "Hold on dear, I might have something for you" and she disappears through the door. A few moments later my grandmother comes back in with a little photo. "Here sweetheart" and she gives me the little picture. I looked into a pair of green eyes. I've seen pictures of my dad before, but this one showed him perfectly. I teared up a little and hugged my grandma.
"Thank you" I said looking at it again.
"You're welcome, sweetheart, now go to sleep, you've got a full day of school up ahead tomorrow." She kissed my head and wished me goodnight.

I stood up from my bed and picked up my bag. I searched for my purse, once I found it, I opened it and put his picture in my wallet next to my moms. I put my purse back into my bag and dive into my bed. I move around a bit until I find a comfy position to sleep in. I close my eyes and almost directly fall asleep.

"Hyun-mi, HYUN-MI" I hear someone screaming as I take out my earbuds. Kate literally jumps me "have you already checked your stats?"
"No, I have not."
"Well, maybe you should, you know."
"And, why should I, you're probably gonna tell me anyway before I have even checked them."
"You know me far too well" Kate says laughing.
"Well, tell me?" I said as I looked at Kate her eyes twinkling.
"You've got third most views right now of all the participants! Isn't that amazing? All the comments on the video are really positive as well" she said taking her phone out of her pocket. She handed me her phone and I scrolled through all the comments. The were generally all about my voice, but there were a few negative ones as well, but the positive ones brought a smile to my face.
"Awesome right?" Kate said smiling
"Hmh!" I said and gave Kate her phone back.

The school bell started ringing and me and Kate made our way to class. The classes flew by and before we knew it, it was recess. Me and Kate got our lunch and searched the cafeteria for a free spot. Once we found one we went over there and sat down. From the corner of my eye I saw Tyler approaching us.

"So I heard our Hyun-mi is gonna be a singer" he said grinning looking sharply at me. There was something in the way he was looking at me that did not seem right at all. I couldn't exactly find out what it was.
"Well, we hope she gets picked to do audition and we'll see what happens after that" Kate jumped in.
"Okay, well good luck Hyun-mi" and winked at me while walking away.

I stared at my bottle of juice when Kate broke the silence.
"Can I just say that was weird as heck?"
"Well yeah, that was really weird indeed" I said still staring at my bottle.
"The way he looked at you was so weird, he either has a serious crush on you or he completely hates you".
"I don't know, but it was weird."
"We should go, class is starting soon again and I want to get something out of my locker".
"Alright, let's go."

The final bell of the day rang and me and Kate seperated our ways to go home. Kate told me just before we parted that the end date for submitting videos was gonna be tomorrow. With the end date coming up soon I felt nervous and excited at the same time. I've always dreamed about being a singer ever since I was young. I've always escaped into singing if something bothered me or if I just felt happy. When I was younger I'd used to give little singing shows in front of my grandparents that always seemed to love them. They always told me that no matter what route I take they'd always support me. So when I told them about the contest they promptly approved me taking part in it.

"I'm home!" I say when I open the front door. "Hi sweetheart, your grandmother is out to get some vegetables" my grandfather said "I've already prepared some tea and cookies for you." I took my jacket and shoes off and joined my grandfather. We talked about school for a bit and then I made my way upstairs to do my homework.

It was around six when my grandmother called me for dinner, today's meal was kimchi stew with some side dishes. I love my grandmothers cooking, I always enjoy her dishes so much. I finished the meal very quick and went upstairs to finish the rest of my homework. I figured I should check out the guy and girl that were ranking before me. I logged in and checked them out. The girl had a really fierce voice and was truly something different. The guy that was ranking first on the other hand, he was talented in rapping and singing, his rapping skills were truly amazing and his singing voice was so smooth. Not to mention that he looked really cute.

I logged off again and stretched out. Gosh I'm tired. I figured I'd go to bed a bit earlier today. I finished all the tasks I had left and slipped into bed. After staring a few minutes I felt my eyes becoming heavy and fell asleep peacefully.
