"You are special, my child. With time you will do great things. Right now, you are too young to understand but just know that you will be able to do amazing things. Like some of the girls in your books," my dad said to me, smiling sadly.
The bus pulled up behind him.
My father hugged me and whispered into my ear, "I trust you. That means I trust whoever you trust and distrust whoever you distrust. We are a part of something way larger than even our own lives." As he said this I noticed a man rush onto the bus and three tall figures in black trench coats board the bus.
I closed my eyes, letting a tear run down my face. "Can't I come with you?"
He backed away from me and put his hands on my shoulders. "Maisie, you know I'd bring you if I could." My dad removed the chain around his neck and put it on mine. I held the blue gem attached to it in my small palm. The gem seemed to glow, a faint cobalt aura around it, for a second. "This has done its time with me. It is now with you. It will protect you when the dark stars fall." Sighing, he continues with a sad smile. "You'll be a savior of the world, and I'll always be proud of you."
"But what do yo-"
My dad cuts me off with a kiss on the forehead. "I love you, Maisie. Never forget that."
He backed away from me. He went up to my mother and wrapped her in an embrace.
"Dan, promise me you'll come back." I know she whispered that but I heard it like she was whispering it to me.
"Don't worry, Annie." He ran his hand through her short blonde hair. "I'm not leaving." My dad backed up from her.
He turned around and went to get on the bus. He began walking. Step by step away from me. He said he was going to be gone for a whole month visiting and old friend in America. I've never been away for him for that long.
If it's even possible, my hearing zoomed into three fast, short beeps. That never means anything good.
I threw my arms out in front of me, shouting, "Wait, Dad!"
My vision was swarmed by slow motion as a shimmering radiated from my hands and formed a dome around me. In the time it took for my dad to turn around, the shimmering and slo-mo vanishes.
As if on cue, the bus exploded into a ball of flames and roasted metal shards. It consumed the bus and everything within five yards of it. That included my family and me.
I thought it was over. I thought my life was over. I thought I was dead. And I closed my eyes. I closed my eyes so I couldn't see what happens when you die. But instead, I had a whisper in my mind telling me to find a way to get to Paradise, Ohio, telling me to find a way to get to Malcolm Goode, telling me to find a way to stay alive. And then it was gone. Forever.
I opened my eyes only to find Hell on the streets of London. Wonderful.
There were bits of metal littered everywhere. People were scattered all over the road and walkways. They all had cuts and some of them even had pieces of metal sticking out of them or their clothes were on fire. Yet there I was, in the middle of a ring of smouldering wreckage, still standing and untouched.
I turned around only to see my parents, burned corpses. My body shook like a leaf. Waterfalls poured out of my eyes. Prying my eyes away from the traumatizing aftermath, I ran all the way home. I ran as fast as I could. I ran faster than any human being could ever run. But I didn't notice it then.
I was only eight years old but I knew my father was gone. I knew my mother was gone. I knew I had to go to Paradise, Ohio and track down Malcolm Goode. So that's exactly what I did.
