"Mmmm!" I wake up to a hand over my mouth.
My eyes take a while to adjust to the dark. Meanwhile, I struggle to rip the hand from my mouth. My eyes focus and I see it's Sam's hand.
"Shhhh!" he puts his one finger to his lips. "I'll move my hand if you stay quiet."
I nod.
"What time is it?" I whisper when he removes his hand.
"Ten fifteen."
"Then why the hell did you wake me up?" I whisper, harshly.
"Because I'm sneaking back to the fair and I wanted to see if you want to come with." He has that dumb grin he makes whenever he's proud of himself plastered across his face. Of course, I had to be put under the curse of thinking it's adorable, but I'd never let that thought leave the security of my mind.
"Sure. For the hay ride?"
"Yeah. We're meeting John, Sarah, and Emily." Even in the dark, I can see him blush.
"Somebody's got a crush," I say teasingly, getting up off my bed.
"Oh shut up."
I laugh quietly. I don't remember falling asleep so that's probably why I still have my clothes on. I just redo my french braid, a little tighter this time. "Okay, let's go," I say, turning to my doorway where Sam was standing the whole time.
He shakes his head, snapping himself out of his weirdo gaze at me. "Follow me," he says disappearing out the door.
I follow him into his room. His window is open, the chilly wind gently fluttering his curtains. He hops onto the window ledge and steps out onto the roof.
"Are you crazy?" I ask, a little taken aback. I've always been a bit of a daredevil but sometimes I think ahead. This is one of those times.
"A little." He smirks.
I see him jump out to the side. I was about to scream and go get his mom but he grabs onto the giant oak tree in the front lawn. He slinks down the tree's trunk slowly and eventually makes it to the ground safely. He smirks up at me and I want to laugh at how ridiculous he looks. Smirks do not fit dorks like Sam.
I follow in his footsteps and hop onto the roof. I line up my shot to the tree and jump. I grab a branch and hold myself up and go across it to the trunk of the mammoth oak tree.
I begin to shimmy down the trunk and I put my weight on the wrong branch and loose my footing on the trunk of the tree. I scream as my stomach drops and I slice through the air like a knife through melting chocolate.
I have a flashback to the bus being engulfed in flames and blowing out into a million pieces in super slow motion. I hear my father's voice, the real one. "It will protect you when the dark stars fall."
I am immediately snapped into an altered reality. My screams are echoed and distant. I fall in slow motion as a shimmering radiates from me and seems to hit an invisible barrier about a foot in front of me. A shimmering sphere forms around me then fades as quickly as it came.
Suddenly, I am popped into the normal present where my screams are ear piercing and the world moves at normal speed. I would've hit the ground on my thigh but instead, the shimmering air hardens and stops me a foot up. However, it disappears a second later and I only fall a foot onto my thigh.
A small groan escapes my mouth when I hit the ground. I turn my head around and see Sam standing a yard or two away from me, mouth open wide. When he catches me looking at him, he shakes his head lifting up those stupid glasses he always wears and rubs his eyes.
