It was a normal day for me. It was summer and I was just trying to sleep in as late as possible and find things to do even though in the small town I live in there was nothing to do ever. Out of the blue my phone dinged telling me that I had a notification on Facebook. It said 'Jon Anthony added you to the group Ads, s4s, and famous admins'. I had no clue what that meant at the time or that five months later the impact one small little group would have on me.
I was beginning to get close with my friend Zarra for a while. She came out as gay to my best friend Jasmine and I on the last day of school a few weeks before any of this happened. Little did I know that I was about to meet her girlfriend Evelynn.
Ding!
It was a message from Zarra, 'hey come hang out we can go to the park or something.'
I messaged back okay. Zarra didn't have a cell phone at the time so we got ahold of each other off of facebook. I was brushing through my dark brown hair which I was in dire need to dye back to my natural color when my phone indicated another notification. I got onto Facebook and checked what it was. Zarra had posted in the group I had been added to. And she got replies quickly unlike any other person Jon had added into the group. Was Zarra already in the group?
I brushed it off and decided to continue getting ready. I put on my shoes and grabbed my keys to my white Jeep Cherokee. I drove to the address Zarra sent me, and trust me it took me like fifteen minutes before I finally gave up and pulled into a flower shop parking lot. Zarra finally came out and to my luck, her house was right across the road.
"You made it alright?" She asked laughing because I was clearly frustrated.
"Shut it," I said harshly then quickly said, "Hey can you tell me what this Ads thing is? Jon added me to it and you seem to already be in it."
"Yeah it's just a group with a bunch of people online. It's really cool I think you would fit in pretty well there," She explained.
"So I should stay in there? What if no one likes me there?" I said feeling the doubt that was constantly present in my mind creep up on me.
"It takes time. Just like my posts and comment. Also try not to get into drama they might not like you for that," She explained.
"Well I will give it a try," I told her and we went and sat on a merry-go-round. This is the funny thing about being friends with someone who is as obsessed with the internet as you are. You both spend time together, inside or out, and no matter where you are you're on the internet. We always took Snapchats of each other and stay on Facebook the whole time.
While I was on Facebook stalking this new group Jon posted 'I accidentally added like 5,000 people to the group sorry guys.'
We spent about an hour sitting on the Merry-Go-Round before Zarra told me that she was dating a girl in ads.
"Who is it?" I asked her curiously.
"Have you seen Evelynn post in the group?" She asked. As a matter of fact I had, and she seemed so sweet and honestly I had from the first post wanted to be her friend.
"Yeah she seems really sweet," I said.
"That is my girlfriend," She smiled shyly down at her lap.
"Oh my gosh! That's so cute! Do you think you could tell her to be my friend?" I asked her.
"Why don't you just message her?" SHe asked me.
"Well what would I say, 'Hi I'm Abby and Zarra told me to message you.'?" I asked.
"Just don't use the xD face," She explained to me, "You'll immediately get shunned."
"Okay," I laughed but then we had to go drop Zarra back off at home. After that was done I drove back home and decided to friend Evelynn.
Within minutes she added me back and I decided why not let's message her. 'Hey I'm Abby and I'm forcing you to be my friend :)'
Within seconds she replied, 'okay! How are you?'
I couldn't believe that she was just okay with us being friends even though that is how I started off the conversation. What do I say back to that? I know I was starting to freak out, but honestly this was a big step in my social comfort zone.
'I'm alright hbu?' Is what I decided to go with. I couldn't even believe that I answered back, but soon enough a friendship had begun. Even if it was about to be awkward for quite a while.
