Chapter 7
About 2 weeks later, Brooke stood by her locker, talking to her boyfriend, Mike. He was spending more time with her now than he ever had before...but no one seemed to notice but Brooke. She'd been acting a little uncomfortable in public with him, but again...no one noticed.
"So," he said to her, "what are we gonna do tonight?" Brooke turned her combination. When it opened, she hoisted some books in and pulled a couple more out.
"Um...I don't know if I can. I think I'm going to the mall with Peyton and Mads," she lied.
"Didn't you go, like, 2 weeks ago? How many pairs of clothes do you need?" Mike asked.
"Yeah," Brooke said truthfully, "but...a girl loves her shopping!" She laughed uncomfortably.
"Of course, Brooke, always doing something with your friends. What about Joss?" he smirked.
"Shut up, Michael," she said, slamming her locker. "You know we're not friends anymore. We don't even talk to her."
"And why is that?" he asked quizzically, but in a way as if he already knew the answers, and Brooke knew he did.
"Just leave me alone! You know what happened!" she cried. And then, under her breath, she remarked, "I wish you didn't know."
"Excuse me, Brooke? What was that? Do we need to have a little talk?" Mike grabbed her arm as soon as students cleared the halls. He yanked her into some janitors' closet and she cried out in pain.
"Let go of me!" she yelled, but Mike had his huge hand covering her mouth already. "Please! Someone help me!!!!!"
About 15 minutes later, Brooke was officially late for class and sure to get a detention. She sauntered down the hallway, not even caring anymore. Her life was becoming a total mess.
She suddenly heard a low noise, almost as if someone was trying to be very quiet. She halted abruptly.
She heard a guy's voice say, "I know. But you can't tell her I told you. She'll kill me."
"Mmmhmm," another voice said. Brooke couldn't make out if it was a guy's or girl's.
"What?"
"Well, I'm just wondering how she'd feel about this. I know her well enough to know she wouldn't like it. I just might have to get going. If she caught me...gosh, I don't even know," the second voice said.
"What are you talking about?" the guy asked.
"Don't worry about it, babe," the second voice said. Well, now Brooke new it was a girl.
There was about a 10-second pause. They're probably making out or something, Brooke thought, disgusted.
"Why can't you tell?" the girl said.
"Because...I feel terrible about it. She was my girl first," the guy said. "This just isn't right. I'm telling you, if she ever found..."
"What are you, afraid? Grow up," the girl said.
