After everything was moved out of the moving truck and the truck drove away we started to take our things to our rooms. Because I didn’t want to take my books, which are in perfect order, out of the bookcases put in boxes and then put back on the bookshelves, my dad and brother had to lift with their knees and put the very heavy bookcases in my room. The whole time they were grunting and swearing in effort they gave me dirty looks, as if it was my fault that I didn’t want to move the mountain of books twice. So tit for tat I just glared right back and goaded them to hurry up. I guess they got tired of me doing that, because they stopped, put the bookcase down and chased me through the house.
Jared kept trying to coordinate with my dad into cornering me, but what my brother didn’t realize was that I could hear him. Laughing at my brother, calling him his nickname from me ‘yaidiot,’ I dodged his attempts to grab my arm with a spectacular spinning move, and ran outside. This whole time my mom stayed out of the way, usually she would gripe at me and Jared for making too much noise, but when dad joined the fray she just didn’t say anything.
I continued to run until I got to the horse pasture and crawled under the barbed wire fence. I turned to see if they followed me, but all I saw was Buddy waving his tail enthusiastically on the other side of the fence.
“I’m sorry that your first real experience with the family was that one.” I told him, I always talked to animals like they were people, because they are such good listeners. “Well, come on, go under the fence, we will go exploring, whaddya say boy?” He barked and instead of going under, he jumped through the middle gap. “Show off.” I muttered. He seemed happy with that conclusion.
We walked around the pasture, coming across three horses, which just looked at us curiously. The youngest, probably not even a year old yet, clopped over and leaned his head down towards Buddy. Buddy being the excitable dog I have seen so far widened his stance playfully and barked in the colt’s face. Well didn’t that just scare the colt to pieces? It jumped and stomped threateningly; worried that it was going to kick at us I tried to calm it down by offering it my hand, so it could learn my scent. It seemed to work, until Buddy barked again.
“Buddy, sit down and shut up.” I snapped. Strangely, he did, he sat down as fast as he could on his butt and didn’t move another muscle. The colt seemed to find it odd too, but continued to sniff at Buddy until one of the other horses snorted and the colt took off after the others.
After that ordeal was over I observed Buddy seriously, the way he was acting was a little weird, he still hadn’t moved.
“You, my new friend are a little off aren’t you?” I leaned down to his level and asked again in a baby voice. “Aren’t you?” He sneezed, and did this whole stare thing that looked extraordinarily like a glare. “Is that all you got for me, a sneeze and a glare? Very original.” I scoffed. Although, now that I think about it I don’t think I have been sneezed at before, that would have been weird. Shrugging at my thoughts I rose up and walked back the way we came, explorer time over.
I looked over my shoulder to see if Buddy was following me, he was in the same position I left him, except his head was turned towards me and he had pleading eyes. Okay super weird.
“Come,” He sprang up and ran to me, he put a whole new meaning to sit and stay, that’s for sure, “Oooookay, yeah, you are just really wei-well trained, that’s it you are a very well trained dog.” I explained to myself, more for my piece of mind than for Buddy’s ego. Calming down since I forced myself to believe what I said I walked home with Buddy next to me.
It turns out I was outside longer than I thought, because dinner was cooked and everybody was around a T.V. watching a movie, since we don’t have a satellite dish yet. As I was closing the door behind Buddy, I heard the Galaxy Song, from Monty Python and the Meaning of Life start up. My dad, brother, and I immediately joined in, we knew all the words since my dad lets us watch, listen, or do whatever we want. He doesn’t shelter us, much to my mom’s displeasure.
“You guys need to watch something else.” My mom grumped. She was always a kill joy, no since of humor what so ever. Dad turned to her and raised an eyebrow. Jared and I just laughed at her; she wasn’t going to stop the movie, because deep down inside she did like the old comedies.
The song was still playing while I walked to the kitchen to get some dinner, singing along by myself. Hamburger Helper, yum, my dad could make a darn good box dinner. I looked down, Buddy was still following me.
“Can’t you sniff out your own food or do you not have any?” with that he put his nose to the ground and sniffed his way around; curious, I became his shadow as he tracked his food. Eventually he got to the pantry and scratched at the door; I opened it and saw an opened bag of dog food sitting on the floor.
“Nope, not there, it is opened meaning you have a bowl full somewhere, go find it.” He gave me a piteous look. “I don’t know where it is. Go find it.”
I closed the pantry door and got me a bowl of Hamburger Helper and left Buddy to look for his food. I sat down, leaning against my dad, watching the movie. It was just ending when Buddy came in the living room and lay at my feet.
“I guess you found your food bowl?” He slid his tail across the floor once then fell asleep. He was getting stranger and stranger, but I decided to keep it to myself and forget about it. I got up put my bowl in the sink and got dressed for bed. It was still light outside, but I was really tired from the move.
I slept with only a couple of dreams keeping me occupied. I felt like something was telling me to hurry up, I saw the yellow eyes again, but for only an instant then everything went black.
****
I felt like I was being transported through time and space, speeding towards my destination. Everything I saw seemed like it was being filtered through someone else’s eyes. The eyes I was looking through were looking at a wolf, a white wolf with brown and black ripple patterns through its fur. It was beautiful, its coat shiny and well kept, as if it didn’t live in the wild but in a home where someone took care of it.
Everything stopped moving then, and the wolf was being placed on the ground, I felt sorry that its coat had to get dirty, that it would never be a domestic creature again. The eyes I was looking through teared up, and I heard a voice.
“Please, don’t fail me; make them see that the time is right to listen again. Make the world whole again; unite the people and the animals. Good luck, I wish you well, you will find help soon.” It was quiet again then-

-I awoke; the sky was just starting to get darker. I looked around, it was pretty here, the woods were a vibrant green that the setting sun accentuated. I closed my eyes again and started to drift to sleep…I jumped up and looked around again. I was in the woods, I was on four feet, and I had a tail. What the hell was going on? I screamed but it came out as a loud howl. Scared, I ran away from the sound that I had made, and from what I had become. Too bad that didn’t work I was still a wolf.
