My sister used to tell me everything good in the world began with you. Not you specifically, but you personally. If you want something from life, it's your job to go get it. Nobody's going to just hand it to you. After all, who do you think you are? You're nobody, dear.

Get used to it.

This concept was drilled into me from a very young age. I won't go into all the gory details; suffice it to say, I had a strange sort of upbringing. I definitely learned early on how to live for myself.

My first lesson: take what you want and don't say you're sorry.

My second lesson: you are nobody. You will always be nobody. Tricking yourself into believing you might actually turn out one of those somebodies you hear about--that's only going to end in tears. And nobody pities nobodies who cry about it.

So, my third lesson?

Get used to it.
