"Wake up! Wake up! We need to leave now!" Father barked.

We awoke with a start, ears pricked. It was warmer than usual, and very bright. Mother and Father's eyes were ablaze with worry, fright, and panic.

What's going on? Is there a badger, a fox?! A human?!

"We have to leave now! Go on, get out of the den! And stay together!" Father's sharp voice pierced my ears.

I scrambled out of the den, shaking with terror. Abah was already out of the den, same with Mother. But where is Gilae? Oh wait... SHES STILL IN THE DEN.

It took me a minute to realize what was going on. Black smoke swirled around our heads. It was a fire.

Gilae yipped in terror. We can't go back! But we need too... She'll die if we don't!

A flaming branch fell, and landed on top of the den, smashing it. Gilae was killed on impact.

Tears welled up in my eyes, threatening to spill over. No. I have to be strong. I have to make it out of here alive, I have to live for Gilae.

Father held Abah in his jaws, and Mother held me in hers. We ran though the forest, hoping to find a part of the forest that wasn't burnt.

We were surrounded. Not by enemies, but by fire. "Mother," I whined. "I want to die snuggled up to you."

"Well then too bad. Because we are not going to die!"

Mother jumped over the wall of fire almost making it. I made it over, Mother never came out.

"Father! Father please help Mother!" I called out in sheer desperation.

But Father was nowhere to be seen. I was on my own.
