The disturbance in the attic made Elizabeth Rouche shudder; she knew what was up there - the remnants of her daughter's life, everything that proved the extremely disabled child had ever existed. She looked worriedly to her husband as he picked up the paper. It was 1894, and the Rouche family were the writers of the bestselling newspaper; "The Morning Gazette."

The couple's small, adopted daughter - Mary - looked up at Elizabeth with wide blue eyes.

'New Mummy...' She looked up, 'What was that sound?' The innocent child tilted her head to the side, silky blonde ringlets falling over her shoulder.

'Nothing, sweetie...' Elizabeth's unsure voice was quiet, as she followed the child's eyes.

There it was again, the noise from the attic. The creaking of footsteps was eminent through the house, as there was the loud creaking of the attic door.

Clunking footsteps came down the stairs, a shuffling of feet as whatever the creature was stopped outside of the lounge. The door rattled, and the ornate brass doorknob fell to the floor with a clatter.
