Chapter 4- That Little Light of Hope

I have this fear that this will be the last time I will be here in this world, I might head back home. I could be better now. What if they buried me though? I was dead last time I remember, maybe I started breathing again. I’m in a coma. That’s all.

“Aurore, enough. We’ve discussed this already. Now focus on your registration.” Caspar was fed up with me thinking this was a dream, he was right; I gave up on believing this was dream. I gave up believing in general.

The old man in the middle of the podium looked at me, with interest as if he could see something in me that I couldn’t. It looked like he was looking at hope for the first time, I would know that look anywhere. “Ms. Blanc, is that right? Yes, well, it says here you are from Earth, but born in Nesha. Explain.”

I was stunned, I couldn’t seem to move. I was born here? No, that’s a mistake. “Excuse me sir, but there seems to be a typo. I was born on Earth.”

He made a grunt as if that was a “yes” or “you’re crazy”. “Well no matter, what are you doing here? No one from Earth just so happens to appear in Nesha.”

I explained the car accident, the dream I had about my sister, Piper visiting me and explaining my past, meeting Caspar, having him explain, and then I came here. I wouldn’t dare explain the dream I had about Damien. That would cause more suspicion. The man just nodded the entire time.

“Ms. Blanc, Nesha is going through a difficult time right now. A man has decided to start killing the child mutants on Earth. This man, Damien, was the first child mutant, we sent him to Earth for protection since Nesha was in a civil war with if we should kill the mutants or not. Well, we have settled on not killing them, but to prevent parents from losing a child, we send the families with mutants to Earth. When they have reached the age of 21 they have the choice to come to Nesha and get training, or stay on Earth and have a regular life as a human. Damien was not happy being sent to Earth because he never got such good treatment, he was older at the time so he already established his powers; the humans saw his abnormality and treated him in disgust. He was beaten, tortured, tease, robbed, alone. He lost all contact from the people on Nesha. He had no one. When he was allowed back he was very reserved, always in his home and would never come out. He wouldn’t look at anyone, if he did, it was an empty expression, the one that would stare into your soul and shred you to pieces. After a while, we found the body of a dead mutant child, completely mutilated. Damien confessed to the killing of this child in a letter, we could never find him. It was like he just vanished. We kept finding more and more bodies of mutant children, but we saw no trace of Damien. He didn’t exist.”

I stood there, eyes wide open, completely paralyzed; my heart just sank into my body like an anchor sinking into the ocean. Damien, he was that man in my dream. He was real? Was that really him? He was messing with my head, I can’t believe it, I was so close to him yet so far. He could’ve killed me right then. Wait, he might’ve. “Excuse me; are you saying Damien was the man who hit me with the car?” The man just nodded. “Well, he failed, and he had many more chances to do it again. Why let me live?”

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.” The man on the left looked at me as if he was annoyed with my questions so decided to answer me with an attitude. I stopped talking. “We have decided that Damien wants to manipulate you to help him in his mission, he sees potential in you. Well, so do we, we want you to join us and let us help you with your abilities; we could see what Damien sees and use it to our advantage. Will you take the offer?”

The room stood still for what seemed like an eternity, I had to think, but I really had no choice and would I really join the man who was trying to kill me. I couldn’t trust him, but I can’t trust these people either, I don’t know what they plan on doing. This is all so sketchy to me. I look at Caspar and Piper then at the three men, they see something in me, they see hope that I can save their people, their world. I will save those children out there; their last day could be tomorrow. They won’t get a second chance like I did and I certainly won’t throw that away, I will defeat Damien and save those kids. I lift my head up and say with so much confidence I’m surprised myself. “I swear to you, I will join you and I will defeat this Damien. Those children won’t have to live in fear anymore.”

Everyone stares at me, I can see Caspar is proud of me, and Piper she’s so happy, she doesn’t have to live in fear anymore either. The three men nod and get up. “You are dismissed; we shall see you here again tomorrow. Also, welcome to Nesha Ms. Blanc. You’ll make a great citizen.” They all leave and the room remains quiet.

                Now what happens…?
