It was a hot summer day. Caroline was getting ready for her last day of school. She had gotten up an hour early so that she could be as stunning as possible, without being too dolled up. She decided on a cute summer dress and a natural make-up. After all, she didn't want Austin's last memory of her to be of someone that she clearly wasn't. This was, of course, if he actually ever noticed her.
Austin had been in her class from first grade until eight grade. Back then he had rabbit front teeth and glasses that took over his whole face. Despite all that, Caroline had noticed his presence as soon as he came in on the first day. However, sometime between freshman and sophomore year, he had grown out all his other teeth, the glasses were gone and his once bowl cut blond hair was now always flawlessly messy. This was also when girls got interested in him. He has never been alone since then. He is always goofing around with his dudes or talking with some desperate girl who thinks she has a chance with him.
Caroline finished her breakfast just in time to catch the school bus. She sat on her usual seat and took in what would be her last ride to school. She had passed in all her classes with flying colors. However, she wasn't the best at all the other aspects of being a teenager. Caroline had never quite understood how people could sleep, be socially active and still have good grades. So she decided to focus on the first and the latter and somewhat ignore the social part. It wasn't like she didn't have any friends. She actually had some of the best friends anyone could ask for. She just wasn't all that interested on drinking and making out with strangers, which seemed to be all they did at parties.
Caroline got out of the bus and, as always, Kacey and Aspyn were already waiting for her, on the front benches. What was unusual was their company. They were talking to a girl that was on their English class who never showed any particular sign of not liking them, but she didn't talk to them either. Caroline's whole group was regarded as somewhat weird. Probably because they were so different from each other. Caroline was a quiet blonde girl with a way too big nose for her face, Kacey was a chubby brunette, with a tendency to speak louder than necessary and Aspyn was a tiny dark-haired girl with mesmerizing blue eyes. They had been friends for as long as they could remember and rather enjoyed watching other people's reactions whenever they came into a room. This girl, , had actually never made any remarks about them, which was something rare.
As soon as the girl saw Caroline approaching, she smiled, gathered her books and got up.
"... and I really do hope you can make it." she finished. She turned to Caroline. "The invitation is open to you too, of course. They'll give you all the deets. Catch you later!"
Caroline watched her disappear into the school building, then, faced the two girls and excitingly asked "Are we on for our first and last high school party?"
