I was only 8. Only 8 when my parents died in a hit and run. Some say it was an accident, but I don't believe it. Ever since then, I was in an orphanage. Well, up until 3 months ago. It was 3 months ago when the Johnson's adopted me. Even though I'm technically Jake Johnson, I like to stick to my real name, Jake Hills.

The Johnson's, ugh I hate saying their name, were fairly rich people due to their chain of fast food restaurants, Pork Barrel. As much as I'd hate to admit it, the food was actually pretty good. That's probably why it's so popular.

Anyway, I would love to say they adopted me because they wanted another child, but they make it seem like its cheaper to adopt than to get a slave. I say another child because, sadly, I have a brother. His name is James Johnson. And, he hated me for some odd reason. I don't understand why though. He gets all the girls, he's athletic, and, somehow, managed to get straight A's. Ever since the Johnson's adopted me, he would beat me up and make fun of my crystal white hair and light blue eye. Yeah, let's just say we don't see eye to eye.

I seriously missed the orphanage. I missed it almost as much as I missed my best friend from there. Blaze Rodriguez. She was simply amazing. Even though she had a temper, she always knew how to cheer me up. She was pretty too. She had the most beautiful red hair, it felt like silk when you touched it, and extremely dark brown eyes. It was so dark, it looked black. She was at the orphanage about a year before me. It was like friends at first sight, as funny as that sounds. Sadly, she had to move  to Florida after being adopted 7 months before me

Now, eleven years later, here I am. A 19 year old college kid, who doesn't have a major yet.  I'm a tall, lanky guy with unusual short, spiked, and white hair and extremely light blue eyes. Most people think I'm either goth or emo, which I'm not. I'm just an ordinary person trying to get past yet another stage in life.

So, I'm currently leaving the library studying on a Friday night. Most college students would be partying, but, when you have no social life, this is what you tend to do. I've been here for about three hours reading up on the three-fifth rule. I've learnt that college midterms aren't that easy, but, then again, no midterm ever is.

I give a nod to librarian as I exited the building. I actually wanted to get home before it was too late. Never know what could happen in the dark, especially with the sun going down earlier than usual. Plus, it was freezing outside due to the low temperatures that winter brings.

'Honestly, does it have to be so cold? It's not even December yet.' I thought as I walked down the street in the direction of my home.

Yeah, I'm not living with the Johnson's anymore. Me not staying there was a mutual agreement, seeing as they readily kicked me out of their house when I turned 18. In addition, they give me 10 grand for me to leave. As if I wanted to stay there.

I walked home in silence. I could've literally seen my small house when something unimaginable happened. Out of nowhere, light neon green liquid rained down on me. It looked...radioactive. I turned around to see where it came from and saw a large truck toppled over, with the same substance that was on me coming from the container it carried and spilled all over the road and sidewalk. My unlucky fate. I'm surprised I'm not currently melting to the floor.

I'm actually kind of ashamed to say that I didn't check to see if the driver was okay. It was narcissistic, but I had an 'every man for themselves' moment as I ran home to make sure that I was okay. As soon as I stepped into my house, I rushed straight into the shower, with my clothes still on. Weird, I know. I just wanted to make sure that they were as clean as can be so that I could put them with my other laundry. Eventually, I took them off. And, that's when more of the unexpected happen. As soon as the cold water touched my skin, the substance instantly froze. Some just stuck to me, while other pieces fell to the floor of the tub, breaking as they did. I quickly turned on the hot water as on alternative route, but it was a failed plan. Turns out the stuff grows in hot water. So, here I am, covered in a lime-green radioactive looking substance in my birthday suit. Nice, isn't it?

I hopped out of the shower, seeing that it had no positive effect. I put on some clothes though.

'Hm...what now?' I thought, trying to think of any other approach to the problem. "Oh!"

I ran back to the bathroom, and started to through the cupboard until I found what I was looking for. The blow-dryer. Why I have a blow-dryer when my hair isn't even that long? I blame my friend, Devin. She came over one day, complaining that the electricity in her apartment went out and that she really needed to dry her hair. Short story cut even shorter, she left in a hurry, saying that she has to get to work, and left it here. I guess I should be happy that she left it here. Because, now I could try to melt the ice. I bent down to plug in the blow-dryer, but some shock off electricity ran through me and the blow-dryer turned on. The weirdest part was that it wasn't even plugged in. It was as if I turned it on myself. To be honest, I should be dead on the floor, considering that my hands a slight kind of wet from the shower.

I sighed loudly in complete frustration. I just wanted this abnormal thing off me. I felt like a mutated avatar. Suddenly, I felt my body becoming lighter. I looked down and I suddenly knew why. The ice had melted off my person to a puddle around me on the floor. This night was seriously getting weirder and weirder. But, being the curious guy I am, I decided to experiment with it. I gathered a glass of hot water and one of cold water, along with an unplugged fan from my bedroom, and set them down in the living room.

I dipped a finger into the cold water first. And, the result shocked me. I stared at my living room with wide eyes. My t.v. was frozen; my couch was frozen; the coffee table was frozen; everything was frozen except for me.

'You have got to be kidding me.' I thought.'Could it get any worse?'

 Knock Knock

Thank you, fate. You really know how to treat a guy. Sarcasm fully intended. I got up from the couch and walked over to the door. I opened it, only to by greeted by the face of my brown haired friend that goes by the name of Devin. Why was she here?

She grinned widely when she saw me. "Hey, Jake."

I responded with a small smile. "Hey, Dev. What are you doing here?"

"I want to know if everything was alright. I heard noises coming from in here and I thought something was up. Could I come in? It's freezing out here."

"Uh." I looked behind the door at my still frozen living room. "How about we take a walk? It's really messy in here."

She chuckled lightly. "Isn't it always? But, okay. I'll wait for you out here while you change into some...appropriate clothes."

I looked down at my boxers and undershirt, and laughed. "That would be a good idea."

"Yeah. I could practically feel my eyeballs burning."

"Oh, be quiet," I said, rolling my eyes at her teasing. "I'll be right back."

I closed the door and quickly ran upstairs to change. Normally, I would leave the door opened for her to come in, but I didn't today for obvious reasons. It took me less than 3 minutes to change into a black long-sleeve t-shirt with dark jeans and sneakers. In no time, I was already out the door saying "Let's go."

"So," I said nervously. "Want to go to the lake?"

"Yeah, but why have you been acting so weird lately?"

"Umm it's kinda hard to explain, but I'll try."

"Have you ever had something like lets say out of the ordinary happen to you?"

"Hey look there's the lake!"

"Oh... ya," I said in a worn out tone.

Dev quickly grabbed my hand and ran to the lake. Dev said," I'll race you." and she took off. Dev was always a really fast runner and always wants to race me. By the time she was at the lake I was only halfway there. Once I got the there I sat down by the shore it was kinda romantic actually. I dont know why I kinda didn't want beleive I liked her. As i tried to "make a move"  Dev pushed me in the water and the whole lake froze.
