A Change is What I Need

"Honey, we're moving..."

My mom's soothing voice kept repeating again and again in my mind as I was packing up the last of my things. My room, my beautiful room, that was once filled with pictures of Amber and I, was slowly being stripped down into its original self. At last, when the last of my books were put into heavy cardboard boxes, I looked around. I was standing in an empty room that I hardly recognized. The light lavendar that my walls were once painted was now turned into a hideous, sickly yellow. I sighed. This wasn't how I wanted my last day in Cavewood to turn out. I wanted pictures to be taken, hugs to be exchanged, but I knew that it was too much to ask for. I had practically no friends in this town, except Amber, of course.

Truth be told, my first reaction to the news wasn't bad. Actually, I was uplifted by the fact that I could start somewhere else, somewhere new, away from this town where people sat shut in their houses all day, never even giving so much as a "Hi," when you were walking back from the grocery store. I kept my excitement reserved when I was with my mother. Even though I loved her to pieces, I didn't want her asking me exactly why I was dancing around the living room in my pink pajamas.

So, I just nodded. This seemed to satisfy her enough, surprisingly, because I always told her what was on my mind.

"Alex?" my mom called out, waking me from my flashbacks, "Are you ready yet?"

"Yeah, almost!" I replied. Then, I took one look at my room and slammed the door shut.

We were driving. My eyes were closed and the window was open, allowing the cool breeze to enter the car. I was excited. I was nervous. I was anxious. Already, in my mind, I was imagining all sorts of embarrassing scenarios, which mostly included me tripping over a rock and falling headfirst on the concrete sidewalk. It was no secret that I was clumsy.

After what seemed like hours, my mom mother pulled up onto the driveway of our new home. "Here we are. Sunset Falls." I nodded quietly and got out of the car. My house was huge. But, it didn't take much for me to think anything was huge. Our house in Cavewood had only two bedrooms and one bathroom. Here, our house was two-story and contained four bedrooms and two bathrooms!

"Wow," I mumbled softly.

"I thought you'd like it," my mom smiled.

Inside, the house was just my taste. It was cozy and comfortable. Rooms weren't so large that it felt lonely and not too small to make me feel congested. It was perfect.

"And for the grand finale," my mom said, leading me up to a door at the end of the hallway on the second floor. She turned the knob. I immediately jumped on the bed and looked up at the ceiling. The first thing I saw was a ceiling fan. But, as I turned my head to the other walls, I saw pictures of me and Amber and me and my mom hung around in a beautiful fashion. There was also posters of my favorite bands and movies/books: The La's, The Fray, and Harry Potter.

"Did you design this?" I asked my mom, my expression amazed.

"Well, yes. But, it wasn't too hard. You see we like the same things," she replied easily, happy to see me so happy.

"I love you, Mom."

"Love you too babe. Gonna go get dinner ready. What do you want?"

"How about we eat out? We do need some morning places to eat!"

"Good thinking. I'll go take a shower and then we'll head out," and with that, my mom left my room, leaving me to my thoughts.

My mom was the best. Seriously. She was just a little kid, like me.

When my mom came out of the shower, I was already dressed in my shorts and T-shirt. My hair hung in a messy ponytail, but I didn't care. I tutted while my mom applied some makeup, when she looked up at me in midst of putting on her lipstick and said, "Do you want some?"

"Mom, you very well know how I feel towards makeup. It ruins the perception others have on you. It creates a mask into which a person hides. It--"

"Okay, enough of the philosophy lesson, let's get going." My mom said, rolling her eyes.
