Chapter 1

"Keys, keys keys! Where are my keys?" I chant to myself as I rush around my apartment, nearly tripping over my cat Peaches. Turning into my living room, I sigh in relief and exasperation to see my keys in plain sight of the coffee table. I grab them and rush out the door, locking it behind me. I make my way down the elevator and to my car in the parking garage. Taking my phone out of my back pocket, I unlock and sit in my Kia Soul that was a gift from an ex-boyfriend. I start the car but before and I can pull out my phone goes off so I do what most people would do and answer it.

"Hello?" I say leaning back into the seat. "Hey Cora!" my best friend Elizabeta exclaims before continuing, " Listen, you know our one customer, Ivan? Well he just brought you a new trainee. You need to get down here asap to take care of him... He's pretty beat up," she whispers the last part sadly before clearing her throat and saying, "Anyway he's in your office waiting." I sigh and tell her, "I'm on my way, see you soon," before hanging up. I pull out and make my way towards my favorite night job.

---

I walk into the building that seems to be my second home only for my past student to hug me and kiss-attack my face excitedly. I giggle out a, "Hey Feli," but then notice a hand- shaped bruise on the back of his neck. I turn him around and study it. "Who did this to you Feli? I'll have them banned from the house if you want," I say and he turns around blushing of all things. "No! No bella, I'm-a fine. Really," he says smiling, then adds, " I kinda liked it..." I giggle then looped my arm with his before making my way to my office. "That's cute Feli. As long as you're happy, I'm okay with it. Anyways, I've got a new trainee and Liza said he's pretty beat up," I stop in front of my office door and turn to my ex-student and friend. "Will you help me clean him up? You know how beat up the ones Ivan sells us are..." I say and Feli smiles brightly, "Of course I'll-a help you bella," he says softly and I smile then open the door. Feli and I walk in then gasp in unison.

"Oh my God. Feli go get Liza and call 911," I say and Feli takes off to find Liza. I rush to the albino man on my office floor in a growing puddle of blood. I take off my shirt -leaving me in a grey tank top- and press it to his raw and bleeding wrist. I then check for a pulse by placing two fingers against his neck and sigh in relief to find a faint one there. I press my knee onto his wrist to help staunch the flow of blood by adding more of my body weight.

After about two more minutes Feli come back in with Liza right on his heels. "The ambulance should-a be here in about five-a minutes bella," he tells me and I nod and turn to Liza who is walking to the albino man's other side. "Liza... why would he do this?" She looks at me strangely and says, "Vell Vhy do you zhink Cora? He's an ex-nation living in zhis horrid society zhat just came from Russia! Vho knows vhat vas done to him!" she says and I nod sadly. "Wait... did you say ex-nation?" I ask and she nods, "Cora, meet your new trainee Gilbert Beilshmidt a.k.a. Prussia." Before I can get another word in Feli - who I never even noticed left- came in with the paramedics behind him. Liza backed out of the way and I shifted in a way that would make it easier for the paramedics to maneuver into my suddenly small office without releasing the pressure on Gilbert's wrist.

My efforts were pointless though when one of the men all but shoved me out of the way causing me to fall awkwardly onto my wrist and then something sharp lodged itself in my shoulder, "Fuck!" was all I said before everything went black.

After all... I've never had a very high pain tolerance.
