Chapter One – They’re Watching.
Jonas
I’m scared. Scared of the night. Bad things come at night. They come. They sit in my room staring at me from all directions their gaze penetrating my covers. Even when I wake mom and dad to tell them they see nothing at all. But they are there. Just out of my parent’s line of sight. Out of the corner of their eyes. Watching. Seeing. Being. They’ve been there ever since that night. The one with the fire, and the screaming, the night where Zach died, the one that nobody remembers… but me. They’re tall. Muscular. Scary, Oh so scary.
I can’t sleep. Somebody help me.
Suzie
As the school bus comes to a halt I see them again. The tall ones, that’s what I call them. Dressed in suits like they’re going to a wedding. I don’t want to get closer but this is my stop. I have to get off. My breath quickens as I walk slooowllllyyy down the bus steps. Their peanut shaped heads creak as they turn to follow me down the street. It doesn’t help that there’s lots of other people around. They can’t see them. I can. As I walk down the street my pace quickens slowly I start to run. Run away from them. Run away from my life. Run away from the night where mom disappeared right in front of me. Run away from the bullies at school who call me a freak and beat me up day after day. Run away from everything. I reach my house. They’re still there. No matter how far I fun I can’t get away. I pull the key out from under the mat and open the door. The lights are on; I can hear the TV from the living room. ‘Daddy” I say desperately in need of comfort. No answer. ‘Daddy” I call again walking to the living room. When I get there I drop my backpack on the floor. Daddy’s gone. It’s happened again. I ball my hands up into fists and scream
Matt
“No! Knock it off!” I scream at my brother. Shoving him away from my dresser. Perhaps a little too hard as he falls to the floor and starts crying. My parents rush in. “Matt!” they say. You know your brother is only 5 years old! “But he was messing with my pendant again!” I cry back. “Well if it’s that important to you then why not wear it?” they ask as they carry Danny out of the room. I can’t wear it. That’s the problem. Ever since I found this pendant on the side of the road one day in a pile of trash I couldn’t put it on. Every time I try I get distracted by something else and go away from it. But I know it has power in it. I hear leaves crunching in my backyard and I look out of my window. There staring up at me is a tall man in a suit.
