"You owe me a tour of this place Aiden," Anjali remembered as we led her to her room. Aiden and I exchanged a look, both of us recalling my first time around.
"Funny, Sidney," I remarked without looking back at her. "You seemed to know where my room was perfectly fine."
Aiden stopped abruptly in front of the scanner to the hallway. He swiped both of our badges and tore Anjali's temporary badge out of her hand to scan it too. "Don't you just need to scan one?" She said from behind both of us as the doors slid open.
"If you want to get electrified lethally, then yes," Aiden said, laughing slightly at my twisted expression. I'd been at the end of one of those things. And you really don't want to be.
The flying devices buzzed in the air, circling both me and Aiden as we entered. I swatted one that got too close to my face and Aiden caught it before it fell, pouting. "She didn't mean it, Buzz Lightyear."
My expression morphed until I was looking at him in disbelief. But it washed away quickly with a shake of my head. Naming one of these after a Toy Story character didn't even make the top ten list of weirdest things he had done just inside the agency.
"What's with the code name?" Anjali asked from behind us. "Retric."
Aiden and I both cursed as we looked at the camera simultaneously. Sure enough, it swerved toward all three of us. Both our gazes dropped to the floor and we quickly walked to where Anjali's room was supposed to be, pulling Anjali along with us. If we were quick enough, they wouldn't see her face.
My breathing was uneven once we got into her temporary living arrangement. Anjali didn't seem to notice our behavior as she looked around in disgust. "It looks like a jail cell."
"That's what I said when I got here," I said, recalling my time in one of the small rooms. "They're not that bad really. I got moved into one of the bigger rooms for the full fledged agents in the basement recently. You're only going to be here for a few hours everyday since you have UC as well."
Aiden shushed us both by putting a finger on his lips. He crept up behind the TV, his footsteps silent like always and pulled it off the wall roughly. I moved silent next to him and examined the selection of wires until I found the audio one.
Aiden put the TV back on the wall, the magnet locking itself onto the black paint and then jumped onto Anjali's bed.
I decided to stay standing as Anjali took perched on the small dresser 553 provided. There was silence for a minute, consisting of me coughing every seconds to make sure my fear of silence wasn't going to be a problem.
"What are we waiting for?" Anjali asked, her voice low as if she was trying to keep our conversation to ourselves.
"You don't have to whisper," Aiden said. "Amber took the audio device out. I disabled the cameras before you got here and told one of the techies to report it as a tech error. They don't know you're staying here and knowing the government, they won't recognize the little comment earlier as you."
Anjali nodded, not looking at least a little offended at how unimportant she was to the government. "They seem to have the biggest interest in me." I rolled my eyes. "I can share if you want."
"Sure," she joked, playing along. "I'll take being a TrianOut agent and you take everything else."
Aiden chuckled and then sat up. "Don't say the base's code name. The cameras automatically try to locate you. Oh and, we're waiting for Perkins and then we'll start explaining what that file meant, Amber."
"Wait." I tensed and then relaxed. "You know about the file?"
Aiden raised an eyebrow and then scoffed. I hadn't told him about the file. In fact, I thought it was only Zack and I who knew.
