Chapter One
"Are you sure this is the right way?" I asked, flipping my sunglasses down to cover my eyes. The road ahead of me was curving each and everyway, I wasn't out of the direct sunlight for more than four seconds before it was right back in my eyes again.
"Yes! I've been here a million times," Cinnabar said, hitting the play button on my cassette player. The sounds of Journey's "Stone in Love" filled my car as we whipped around the turns of the curving mountain road. "What the hell are we listening to?" Cinna asked, rearing her head back as if she'd just been bitten.
"Calm down. It's just Journey." She moved to eject my tape. "I swear to God, if you touch that button I will break your fingers." Her hand moved back into her lap and I nodded approvingly. "Good. After this song, you can change it to whatever you like. The tapes are on the floor in the case."
We drove for a while not talking. I was singing along with every note of Journey, savoring one of my favorite songs of all time... As soon as the song ended, Cinna switched out the tape for another one.
"Warrior is back."
"We gonna rock this."
I shook my head at the predictability of Cinna. "Why am I not surprised?" I asked before singing along with B.A.P.
"Because. You know if you have this tape, I will find it, and I will play it. We speant too long making this bugger not to listen to it!"
I knew she was right, we had spent hours searching for the albums before we could actually copy them to the tapes. It was well worth the hassle although some people didn't agree. But, that's just what you have to do when you have an older car. You go through the hassle of making cassette tapes or you listen to the radio. I preferred to have my cassettes, good music no matter where you are!
Cinna continued to give me directions as more roads began to branch off of the one that we were on. Eventually, after about three songs, I pulled into the gravel parking lot. There wasn't a whole lot to see here, we were still back in the trees.
"Are you sure this is the right place?" I asked, unsure of Cinnabar's directions. It wouldn't be the first time she had gotten us turned around and lost. I would hate to be lost this far up into the wilderness though. There weren't any houses around, just currently abandoned hunting shacks and the occasional cabin.
"Yes I'm sure," she said, feigning hurt. "Don't you trust my directions?" I shrugged my shoulders and she "hmphed" before getting out of my car and shutting her door with more force than necessary...
Cinna started walking off into the trees and I caught up to her quickly, my longer legs making the trip much faster than hers. She pushed through the branches and low brush with ease and before long we came out at a small clearing.
"I told you I knew where I was going," Cinna muttered under her breath. She most certainly had known...
Now that we were through all the trees we were standing high up on the mountain that overlooked our small, sleepy town. In the center of the clearing, there was a massive stone altar. There were stairs that led up to the second level where many a couple has taken their wedding vows. A large, wooden cross was built into the top and it cast a long shadow on the ground with the sun behind it.
"It's beautiful," I breathed, walking closer. I climbed the stairs and hoisted myself onto the wall, next to the cross, and sat with my legs dangling down. I turned my head and looked out at the rolling farmland stretched out before me. "No way! Is that my house?!" I shouted excitedly.
Cinna came up and joined me. From our vantage point, we could pick out both of our houses, our school, her church, and my work.
We ate lunch up at the altar. The sun shone down on us happily as we layed in the grass and just enjoyed the day out. There really isn't a way I would rather spend the day. Cinna and I didn't get to see each other much anymore because now that I'm out of school, I'm working all the time and she'd been busy with school. The first day of summer break we decided would be our day and it truly couldn't have gone any more flawless.
When the sun was finally starting to dip below the horizon, Cinna and I packed up the things we had brought with us. "Are you going home or are you coming to work with me?" I asked, shutting my door behind me.
Cinna buckled herself in, pushing her ginger hair over her shoulder. "Home," she said, making a face. "I have to get the house ready for my mom's book club tomorrow." She rolled her green eyes at me and I laughed, driving back down the curving mountain road.
We didn't argue about the music this time, just relistening to B.A.P on the way down. It was an easy choice that we both loved. Cinna had gotten me absolutely hooked on these boys when they first debuted and there was no turning back once you committ to the baby life.
After twenty minutes or so, we made it back down to town and I drove Cinna to her house. She hopped out of the car and waved goodbye as I drove to my own house. I checked the time quickly and noticed I had less than an hour to get to work.
I showered, and put on fresh make-up. I decided to let my curly brown hair fall loose so I added a little mousse and called it good. My uniform was hanging in my closet so I grabbed it and hopped into the skirt before buttoning the shirt over my chest. I always leave the top button open so I have room to breathe and then I grabbed my skates, running back down the stairs.
I checked the time. I was down to twenty minutes. After doing a final check in the mirror on the fridge, I skipped out to my car.
"When are you going to come over and let me see what you're hiding under that waitress outfit, Gwen?" My neighbor shouted across the fence separating our yards.
"About the same time hell freezes over, Hunter." I shot back, snarkily. He was about to say something else but I was already in my car, revving the engine and blasting "One Shot" through the speakers. I whipped out of my driveway and laid a little rubber on the road.
The drive through town was a short one. I only lived a few minutes drive from The Diner where I worked. When I pulled into employee parking lot I noticed that there weren't as many cars as there should be for a Friday night.
When I walked through the doors and into The Diner I noted that there weren't very many patrons either. I shrugged, I guess it'll be a slow night. In the break room I put on my skates and took a few laps around the room to get used to them again. It had been a few days since I'd worked last and I didn't want to fall, something I'd seen many a girl do.
I went around and checked all the tables before skating my way back to the kitchen where Andy was leaning back, nothing on the grill. "Well, I wonder when they're going to get here," he grumbled to himself.
"When who will get here, Andy?" I leaned up against the doorjamb, cocking my eyebrow at him. He knew I hated it when he kept secrets from me.
"Just someone..." he said vaguely, only succeeding in angering me more. The bell above the door rang and I looked up to see everyone who had been in here previously, leaving.
"Where are they all going?" I asked, looking at their tables. There wasn't a single one of them who had stayed.
"Some hot shot band bought out the whole place tonight. Their manager said it's because they're shy. What world famous band is shy?" Andy just crossed his arms over his chest and rolled his eyes.
"It'll be fine." I patted his arm. The bell chimed again and I heard the sound of soft voices, too quiet to distinguish what they were saying. "I'll be right back."
I skated over to the table I could hear them all talking at. I had my head down as I rummaged in my pockets for my pen and note pad. With a small spin I stopped in front of their table. "Hi, my name is Gwen and I'll be your server tonight. What can I get you all to drink?" I looked up at them, pen perfectly poised over pad and I felt my mouth drop open ever-so-slightly.
"I'll have a glass of water..." Bang Yongguk, leader of B.A.P and my own personal obsession, said with a gentle smile.
