There was a stunned silence around the room. Merlin was standing tall, proud and for the first time everyone could see a look of power an royalty in him. Only the people next to him could see slight trembles in his hands and the desperate look that he was giving Arthur. Arthur had looked confused when Merlin had walked up and taken his place by the Prince and the Princess. But as he spoke the look became one of furious unacceptance. Arthur regained his composure and spoke.
"I wish to speak to our visitors in private." And with that people began to scurry out of the room, throwing backward glances at Merlin.
"Arthur," Merlin began only to be cut off by stern look from him.
"Your highness," Ölwyn said, lowly bowing. "Please, do not feel anger towards my brother. He did what was he supposed to do. Was he supposed to put himself in danger? Was he supposed to put me and my brother in danger? He did it to protect us. Had he come to your father and said that he was the Prince of a King at war from a kingdom that noone has ever entered he would have been locked away, or worse killed. Our father needs him safe. Once we find my father Balinor-" She was cut off by a strange look from Arthur thrown in Merlin's direction. "What is it?" Ölwyn questioned, confused.
"I was going to wait a bit longer before I told you all." Merlin said, "Father is dead." A small gasp left Lunet's lip.
"The king has died. When? How?" Vortimer asked.
"A few years back, saving mine and Arthur's life." Merlin whispered trying not to let tears escape.
"Well, this complicates things. Merlin, you do know what this means?"
"Yes Launfal. I know."
Arthur by this point was looking very confused and a war was within his head. In the span of under an hour his view of Merlin had changed from a bumbling, sometimes idiotic man servant to Crown Prince on the run from a threat that began when he was just 13 years of age. He respected Merlin but at the same time he felt anger and animosity towards him. He understood why he hadn't told him when he was just the Prince, but now that he was king it would have been very easy just to tell him. On the other hand, would Arthur really have believed Merlin without proof. Finnaly he turned to speak to them all.
"I understand why you didn't tell me Merlin. And I will still help your cause. In the mean time I wish to be left alone and not disturbed by anyone. Is that understood?" He said directing the last bit at Merlin.
"Yes your Highness." The chorused stepping out of the room. And leaving Arthur to his own thoughts. As Merlin exited the room the tears he had been suppressing finally slipped out. He felt his friends touch his shoulder and say his name, but he didn't want them right now. Right now he wanted to be alone. Just like Arthur did.
