I didn't realize that my expression was so sad until Nathan asked me about it.
"What's wrong? You look upset," he said, leaning forward. He took a mouthful of food and stared at me, slowly chewing.
I stared back at him for a moment, unsure how to answer his question. I obviously couldn't tell him.
I realized I was so sad from all the memories that had come back to me. All the suffering I had done... All the pain I had endured...
I shook my head. "No... Uh, no. Nope! Not at all! Not me!" I felt my cheeks get really hot, and they were probably getting redder. I looked away and quickly sat down at the table, starting on my meal.
I felt his eyes staring at me intensely. "Can you stop looking at me, please?" I asked.
"Oh, yeah," Nathan replied, looking away and nodding slightly. "It's just you're cute when you eat."
Weirdo
I stopped and dropped my fork, looking up and staring at Nathan. He was smirking and staring at me again. We stared at each other for about a minute straight in utter silence.
My cheeks had probably broken the limit on how red they could get.
"I uh... have to go now. I hate to eat and run" I said nervously, as I got up and took my jacket.
"Goodnight," I said smiling.
"May I walk you to your car???"
"Um... No, I'm fine." I said, walking away and headed for the exit.
"Oh c'mon, Lily. Just let me walk you to the car, I don't want you getting hurt. Just this one thing and I'll leave you alone." He said getting up and walking beside me.
I signed, "Fine." I started walking towards the exit, knowing that Nathan was just behind me. I moved quicker, kind of wanting him to leave.
I swung open the door and jogged towards my car, looking around me. I felt that someone was watching me, and had the same intent as the people before. I wondered if the two who I had just previously escaped had told their little thief friends, and their thief friends told their thief friends, and so on, causing them all to be on to me and looking for my money.
I placed my hand on the handle of the car door, thinking about where I was going to go. I had intended to leave my parent's house without a single word, so there was no possible way I could go back now. I'd have to sleep in my own car.
I felt Nathan push me out of the way, and open the car door for me. I thanked him quietly and sat down inside. He was about to close it behind me when suddenly I had the urge to ask him a question, probably for the second time.
"Wait! Why... why did you save me?" I looked away, embarrassed.
"'Cause I'm not an asshole that lets someone die and lose their money," he said bluntly with a smirk.
"Well, sure, but still," I said, holding back a small chuckle.
"That's it," he said, looking away also. I stared up at him.
"You're not telling me something. You're hiding something, what is it?" I asked.
"Nothing," he said as he shut the door and walked away. I slumped down in my seat and crossed my arms, thinking about what it could possibly be that he was hiding from me.
Although I already knew he had a thing for me(it was extremely obvious), I desperately hoped it wasn't something as sappy as that. Maybe he was a part of an association? Maybe he was an undercover cop?
I stuck the car key into the ignition to start the car. I pulled out of my parking spot, and drove away.
