When fate comes calling…
“Yes, it’s me, Cole. I’m calling just to tell you that I’m done now. This thing that was between us? Yeah, it’s gone. You cut me loose and I’m calling let you know that it’s too late to get me back. Because I’m going out tonight on a date with a beautiful girl. She’s more beautiful, kind, sweet, intelligent, romantic…reliable…optimistic…Th-than you ever could be! So, good-bye! Forever!” Beep.
“Hello, this is Camilla. I-I don’t think that you know me, but I wanted to let you know that you called the wrong number, uh, before. You seemed to be meaning to call your, um, ex-girlfriend and…Well, I suppose you just, er, dialed wrong and…Uh, thank you, ‘bye.” Beep.
“Hi Camilla. Thank you for letting me know; I appreciate it. But I’d, um, like to ask how my message sounded to you, you know, if I called my ex-girlfriend and said the same thing. I’m, well, sorry to bother you with this, it’s just that your voice sounds so, uh…compassionate? Understanding? And I don’t have many friends whom I could ask about this…I’m sorry, forget it. I’m sorry for wasting your time…” Beep.
“Hi Cole—uh, it is Cole, right? Anyway, I wouldn’t mind giving you a bit of advice on this matter. Um, well…First of all, I feel you should strive to rid your voice of all that anger. You should appear calm and collected—mature—when you deliver this message. Second, you should probably try to hold back on all the words describing your new, uh, girlfriend. It makes your claim sound less plausible and it also hurts the confident demeanor I feel that you’re aiming to relay…Uh, thanks. Goodbye.” Beep.
“Camilla, it’s me, Cole. Thank you for your advice. And, well, I have to admit; the message was a lie. I don’t have a new girlfriend. I just, uh, wanted my ex to think I did…That I’d fully moved on…Well, I don’t know why we keep getting each others’ voicemails; I’ll try to call at a different time and see if you pick up…Well, thanks again. ‘Bye.” Beep.

“Hi there, Cole! I’m so glad we finally connected…That long phone call we exchanged probably cost us both a small fortune, but I’m certainly not complaining! Coffee was nice…Wow, we have so much in common! It’s funny that we both just recently graduated from the same college but never met…Well, I’m, uh, not so sure why I called you…I know you’re at work now. Gee, teaching sounds so much more time-consuming than journalism, I can tell you that! Uh, well, I guess I just wanted to listen to your voicemail recording once more, just to remember how this started…See you soon.” Beep.
