I'm not sure why I kissed him.

I stayed away from him all through initiation, anyways, so I don't know why I chose to do that in the first place.

I mean, on the one hand, it's not like he sought me out or anything. But still.

Anyway.

I passed initiation. First place. Uriah was second, Christina third. That earned me an opourtunity as Second or leader of Dautless, which also earned me an opportunity to be killed by Eric or Four.

The walk was short, but I paused barely halfway down it.

I imagined their reaction.

Mom would immeadiately suspect me. Dad would try to reason it out.

Either way, they would hate me. And I didn't think I could handle that.

A muffled sob from inside broke me.

I pressed three fingers to my mouth, eyes glassy.

And I spun away, running down the street.

I finally stopped at a park shaded with trees and empty. I fell to my knees on the grass and began weeping.

"You can let it all go," said a willowy-high voice. I looked up.

And there stood Melina.
