My eyes fly open to the sound of my 5 am alarm. I smile because I know I am 2 days away until summer is here. I breathe in the ocean air coming from the windows. I sit up and look outside my window into the endless blue abyss already calling my name. Summer. I smile and sprint to the bathroom. I take my wet swimming suit off the hanger and put it on. It is wet being this is only a daily routine in my life. In the life of me, Kailani Tahinto. I know what you’re thinking crazy name, right? But what do you expect when you grow up in a Hawaiian family. For future reference just call me Kalli for short.

I slip on my wetsuit and head into the living room where my dad is eating breakfast. My dad is the Hawaiian foundation of our family. His name is Kai, which I was closely named after. He is full-native Hawaiian and grew up speaking the native language. Funny thing, I look not one bit native at all. Yet I guess one advantage is I don’t get sunburns. The truth is I look more like my mom. He is the reason my mom moved to Hawaii. No one is more important to me than him. He has taught me everything. “Good morning Kalli, and where do you think you’re going at this time?” he smiled and questioned me.

“I think you would be able to take a wild guess.” I winked. I ran over to the kitchen and grabbed an apple.

“Well I will call you in when it is time.” He politely said, then proceeded to open a newspaper as my mom walked in. My mother…she is just wonderful. I look like her twin but maybe I am a bit darker. Sun bleach blonde hair and green-blue eyes….I even have her freckles! She is the most hardworking women I know. That is one reason my dad fell in love with her. She has so much ambition. She said it was love at first sight. My mom grew up in England and after spending a few months in Hawaii studying ocean life she knew that he was the one. They grew fond of each other. They are inseparable.

She came over and kissed my forehead, “Good morning Kalli.”

“Morning Mom.” I smiled

“Another outing?” she questioned. Both my parents know my daily routine.

“Yeah. Mina and Logan will be waiting for me in about 5 minutes.” I replied causally.

“Alright. Be back early and be careful, you hear?” she said sternly. I wandered around the kitchen opening cupboards.

“Aye, Aye Captain!” I laughed taking a hand full of Captain Crunch.

My mom gave me ‘the look’. So I stopped laughing. She poured some coffee and made her way over to dad. He smiled and pulled her down into a kiss, “Good morning,kaʻu pua.” Alright, just to clarify that’s not my mom’s real name. My dad calls her that. My mom’s name is Elaine. Kaʻupua means “my flower” in Hawaiian.

“You are going to make me spill coffee everywhere. Couldn’t you have waited until I set your coffee down?” Elaine laughed.

“Nope. Not a millisecond can go without me doing that when your around.” He grinned.

My stomach started turning. EW. “I think I just threw up a little. That’s my cue to go! Aloha makuahine a me makuakane!” I yelled sprinting towards the sliding glass door.

They just stared at me and smiled shaking their heads.

“Be careful.” My mom yelled one last time.
