*Zuri's Drawing*

"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: "What! I thought that no one but myself..." -C. S. Lewis

Zuri's POV

Remember when you hit the brakes too soon
Twenty stitches in a hospital room
When you started crying
Baby, I did too
But when the sun came up
I was looking at you
Remember when we couldn't take the heat
I walked out, I said, I'm setting you free
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
When the sun came up
You were looking at me

Out Of The Woods' by Taylor Swift blared through my earbuds as I sat at one of the picnic tables just outside the school finishing a drawing for art class. I have had this song on repeat since the day before yesterday and have yet to change the song. Today was the start of the week so I was was sitting outside waiting for Shamira to join me before school started. Even if she did not come before the bell rang signaling the start of another nerve wrecking day of school, we had first period together.

Just as I was finishing shading in the side of the girls face a shadow hovered above me blocking the sun from my view. I immediately tensed in fear before relaxing when Shamira's voice drifted to my ears.

"Damn mami!" She said as she took a seat right beside me.

"What?" I ask softly.

"That drawing!" She said before taking a bite of the apple she held in her hand before offering it to me to take a bite as well.

I shook my head at the offer before beginning to put my art supplies away. Once they were tucked safely inside my bag I turned to face Shamira and was instantly met with a death glare she was emitting towards me. I instantly flinched self-consciously as I thought of all the times my father has given me that that glare. She must have seen me flinch because her face instantly turned soft as pity began to fill her face and I wave her off.

"What did you eat for breakfast?" She asked.

I look her in the face and begin to tell her a complete lie because I know how this will end if I tell her the truth but her face already showed she was not going to believe me anyway so I sighed and nodded my head truthfully.

"Now Zuri," she said with a stern voice," I have told you multiple times to eat. It is not healthy for you to go without eating." She scolded me like a child.

I sat there a small smirk playing at the corners of my mouth as she continued to rant about the side effects of not eating. She finally saw the small smirk and stopped ranting, squinting her eyes for a second before bursting out into a fit of laughter.

"I sound like a mother don't I?" She asked.

"Nah," I said with a smile," You sound like a strict mother."
