“Did you hear about Matt and Vivian?” Isabel said as she slid in the seat next to me.

I turned to my best friend and spoke with a mouth full of food. “Um, no. What about them?”

Isabel raised an eyebrow. “Seriously? Wow. You’re late.”

“Whatever. So what happened?”

“They broke up.” She said flatly.

I put down my slice of pizza. “No. Way.”

“Way.”

I can’t believe this. Well, actually, it’s not surprising. I kinda saw this coming but I didn’t think it would happen this soon.

Matthew Faulkner was probably the biggest popular jerk guy in our school. He’s known for having girlfriend after girlfriend. The number one player. He asked Vivian (who was my other best friend, Jake’s ex-girlfriend) out two days ago. Jake and Vivian were still dating at that time, until Matt came over and stole her away. Poor Jake, he was so in love with her.

As much as a hate Matt, I thought he was being a gentlemen to her so I thought they’d last a really long time.

I was dead wrong.

“H-how did this happen?” I asked.

“Well…” Isabel said. “You know how yesterday was her birthday right?”

I nodded.

“So like, during C lunch, Matt told Vivi that he wrote this little poem especially just for her birthday. He  stood up in front of her and read it off a paper.”

“A break-up letter?” I guessed.

“Psshh. You wished.” Isabel sneered. “The paper was just for show, he didn’t really wrote anything. He was like, Vivian I really enjoyed the past few days with you and since today is your birthday---”

“Aw.”

I have a poem for you…” Isabel continued without pausing. “Roses are red, violets are blue; trashes got dumped and so did you.”

My mouth dropped open. “No. He did not.”

Isabel shook her head in disapproval. “Believe it, woman. I expect you to found out it like, right at the end of the day, cuz everyone was talking about it. It was so awful, Cait. Vivian was beet red and she tears were coming out but she didn’t make any sound. And Matt was just laughing at her along with his friends. That jerk, I wanted to punch him so badly.”

“Oh my gosh. I-is Viv---” I said.

Well actually, I thought Vivian deserved it because she left the sweetest guy ever for that jerk.

I didn’t get to finish my sentence because Vivian and Jake just came in and took at seat across from us. Jake had his arms around her, despite the fact that she ditched him for Matt. Poor thing, he must’ve really loved her. And Vivi looked awful. Her eyes were puffy and red and she had no makeup on and her hair looked like she just woke up and forgot to comb it.

“What are you guys talking about?” Jake asked us, his voice small.

“Oh, uh.” I glanced at Isabel who shook her head slowly. “Um, nothing. Just about uh, stuff.”

Isabel stomped at foot and gave me a look that said how lame can you be?

But I ignored her. “I heard about what happened yesterday, Vivi. Matt is just a bastard and doesn‘t deserve someone as amazing as you.” I was going to add but I don’t feel sorry because you had hurt Jake for him, but I didn’t have the heart to say that.

Vivian just sat there with a blank expression.

“Vivi--”

“I’m fine!” Vivian said, her voice is harder than jolly rancher and Jake gave me a silent look.

I opened my mouth to protest, but Isabel poked me in her way of telling me to shut up. But she wasn’t looking at me, her eyes were on something behind me.

“Here comes the jerk.” Isabel whispered.

It didn’t take me a while to figure out who she meant. I turned around too, to see Matthew came in the cafeteria with a smug grin on his face, his arm around this pretty blondie.

Anger rose to my face. He just broke up with Vivian yesterday and now he’s already moved on with another girl. But the thing that really bugged me is that he didn’t even like, at least looked sorry for what he did and smiled like nothing had happened.

“Son of a b—“ Jake started to yell.

 “Jake!” Isabel interrupted.

I glanced at Vivian, who had her head down and suddenly took an interest on my slice of pizza.

Matt strutted forward with his new girlfriend and then stropped just a few feet in front of our table. He grabbed the girl by the shoulder and then kissed her; totally oblivious to the fact that Vivian was sitting right in front of him. It wasn’t a passionate kiss, it was more like a forced one, but it’s enough to make me gag.

Isabel’s mouth dropped her eyes wide and Jake clenched his fist, his face full of anger. And I guessed Vivian must’ve saw it too because I saw a tear streaming down her face and she didn’t bother to wipe it off.

“Oh, sweetie…” Isabel said soothingly.

But Vivi didn’t listen, she grabbed her bad and brushed past us then stormed out the cafeteria. On her way out she actually bumped into the blondie causing them to break apart.

“Vivian!” Jake called and then he followed her out.

Around me, I heard girls whispering something and some guys stood up and smacking Matt high fives. But Matt was busy looking after them, I couldn’t see his expression.

“Okay. That’s it.” I said and then I stood up ready to take action. Isabel pulled me down.

“Caitlyn,” she said. “Calm down. It’s not going to help.”

“Look.” I said. “We can’t just sit here and do nothing. He ruined Jake and Vivian’s relationship and now he totally wrecked Vivian!’

“I know. But violent is not the answer, you know that.”

“This is not the time to quote Einstein, Is.”

Isabel gasped, she looked offended. “How dumb can you be? It’s not Einstein, it’s---”

“Whatever.” I said. “We’ve got to do something about this. I won’t let this pass. He’s done enough.”

“Why?” Isabel asked. “It’s Vivian’s problem, not ours.”

“I’m not doing this for Viv.” I insisted. “It’s for Jake. Matt stole Vivian away from him and she's dumb enough to believe that he's actually going steady with her.”

There. I said it. But somehow, it didn't make me feel better.

“Okay. But what? We need a plan, which we do not have.”

I thought about it. But it didn’t take me a long time to figure out what to do. I’m an expert at this. (Not bragging). “Alright. I got a great one. No, not just great, awesomely awesome one!”

But Isabel just rolled her eyes. “You and your plans…always get us into troubles.”

“No.” I insisted. “This time, it’s not.”

“That’s what you said last time.”

“Trust me.”

“Fine. So, what is it?”

I hesitated. “No, not right now. Too many people around us.”

“Oh, come on.”

“Come over my place tonight.” I said. “I’ll tell you the whole thing.”

Isabel nodded. “I’ll try. It’s better be good.”

“It is.” I grinned. I’ve got lots of explaining to do.

Watch out, Matthew Faulkner, because you’re about to taste your own medicine.
