Prologue

The forest was desolate of all life. It mocked the cloaked elleth as she wandered through the wood that once held the moniker Greenwood. She laid her hand on a tree, a tear trailing down her face; she felt no life.

"Forgive me, mellon nin, that I wasn't here to save you," she whispered, running her hand down the aged tree. She froze as she sensed the presence of another being, her hand inching to the hilt of the dagger hidden in her Greenwood emblazoned cloak.

"You should come back." An elf revealed himself from out of the shadows. "It has not been the same since you left," he mentions.

"You know I cannot," she returned shortly, turning towards him. "It would be against the King's wishes. Even being in the wooded area is testing the limit."

"The King —"

"— has commanded me to remove myself from the palace. He is someone who does not take lightly the disobeying of orders. You of all people should know," she sighed, pulling her cloak tighter around her.

After a moment of silence, she spoke again. "Do you remember this part of the forest?"

The elf nodded, glancing at the tree she leaned on. She continued, "I used to bring you here when you were just an elfling. Your father would get so mad when I allowed you to come this close to the border; but I ignored him, like I always did. You always had some kind of connection with the trees. I think you got it from me." At this, she chuckled. "Your mother was different. She was a kind elf and would sometimes accompany us here. She was one of the main reasons your father even allowed me to bring you out here."

"I remember only bits of her," he murmured. "Ada doesn't talk about her."

The elleth scowled. "Of course he doesn't. He refuses to speak of anything that might break his hard facade." Her stare then softened. "How is he?"

"He doesn't say it, but he misses you," the elf responded, reaching over and pushing back the hood of her cloak, revealing her tangled white hair. She winced, her eyes revealing remorse.

"He'd better," she joked, smiling weakly. She attempted to pull her hood up, but the ellon just shook his head and stilled her hand. She gave up and frowned. "He reduced me to what I have become now. A wanderer without a home. Forgotten by all."

"What had happened was not your fault."

"And yet, I am being punished for it. Exiled."

"He was not in his right mind."

The elleth looked straight into the ellon's blue eyes. "And that is the problem, my young Prince. It matters not any longer whether or not his thinking is straight; you see, my father was a King who never went back on his word, whether it was right or wrong. And your father is no different from him."
