Chapter 3

Tonight was the big night, Urnight's first episode was airing around the world. I was staying over at Amy's to watch the first auditions episode that we were supposed to be on. We were sprawled out over her pink duvet fighting over a bowl of popcorn as a voice from the T.V. interrupted us: "It's what you've all been waiting for...the world premier of...URNIGHT!"

Amy and I squealed as the shows logo appeared on the screen. The shows host welcomed the viewers, he was covered in fake tan and showing off his bleached white smile. He discussed the general gist of the show and introduced each of the judges. The screen showed close ups of the four worldwide famous faces. The first three smile excitedly, but Laurie Davids seemed more reserved.

The auditions began. A few went by until we came across an outstanding jazz performance done by a girl a few years older than me, called Darcy Robinson. She walked on to the stage gracefully and seemed to be much more genuine than the previous contestants, but then she started singing and her voice turned husky and I got shivers down my spine. She was good. Really good. After Darcy was praised by the judges and put through to the next round Amy turned to me, "I don't know what all the fuss is about! She wasn't that pretty and her voice was average."

I stared back at her and and rolled my eyes, but I was not ready to argue with Amy. That comment was typical of Amy, at times she can be vain and insensitive and it it is the one thing that caused a lot of arguments between us.

I make a mental note of Darcy's name and acknowledge that this competition will be anything but easy.

A few minutes later an image of my best friend appeared on the screen. Amy was staring directly into the lens, her eyelashes fluttering, gold hair shining and a smirk spread proudly across her face. I turned to her to see her sat next to me with her green eyes fixated to the screen. She then reached across and grabbed my arm digging in her fresh manicure. I hadn't been able to see her performance, but listening to her now her voice was crisp, clear, perfect.

After her performance I managed to free my arm from her death grip and complemented her on her performance once the judges put her through to round two. She walked off the stage as I remembered her doing with so much grace. It's clear the stage is where Amy belongs, she looked so relaxed and at ease up there. Next thing I know a very familiar pair of hazel eyes, thick rimmed glasses and freckles all surrounded by chaotic mass of orange hair popped on to the screen. I also was starting to really regret wearing my lucky jumper, it's bright blue with a picture of a sloth on. I had thought it was cute and funny, but the host was giving it weird looks. Seeing myself made me grimace and want to look away. I saw myself shuffle onto the stage obviously extremely uncomfortable. My hair was covering my whole face, I looked like an awkward ball of orange fluff waddling on. I finally lifted my head and saw my eyes nearly pop out of my head as I took in the audience. I heard the beginning of my song and my hands shaking as they strummed my guitar. My voice finally came out strong, loud and clear. I was on the stage where I belonged as well.

When my performance was done I was happy with it, I'd done a pretty good job. There was one high note I missed, but I'd covered it, only Ms Maxwell and I would be able to tell. Olly Daniels, Katy D and Carla Carrey all said well done and complemented me endlessly. Then it was Laurie Davids turn to speak. I remember the excitement I had felt to hear what he thought, you could even hear my nervous intake of breath through the microphone. The camera panned to his face and I saw the lines on his forehead that formed into a frown and he just said nothing. An awkward silence settled through the crowd which changed to confused murmurs. He just said "Lets vote." as he looked down the line of other judges.

"Yes! Yes! Yes!"

"Obviously, yes."

"You're going be a star. YES!"
