I scribble my name on the check in list. I am meeting my counselor, mrs. sheffield. she is a short woman, about 30 years old. she has curly red hair and dark purple glasses that's rims flare out at the ends. her voice is deep, but still sounds feminine. I trudge over to a seat in the waiting room. I'm joined by a bald man with headphones grasping into his head.
'why does he have to wear these?' I think to myself.
after a few minutes of waiting, the woman at the front desk calls for the man. as soon as he gets up, he is greeted by three counsellors, left and right.
my heart kind of drops, out of sorrow for the man. I hope I never end up like that. people I barely know asking me if I'm okay and learning all of my darkest secrets that no one should ever know.
a few more minutes later, the woman calls my own name. it weird how your name can have a different meaning depending on who it is saying it. to them I need help, to myself I need a way out. I push my thoughts away and walk to the door. mrs. sheffield is waiting for me in the hallway, with a smile of bright white teeth.
"hello, connor. so glad you're coming back to visit us!" she says between smiles. I know she's lying. she knows how messed up I am, only one secret she doesn't know. she stares at my expressionless face for some time before asking "how are you?"
"fine." I answer, in the nicest way possible.
Once we get into the room, I look around. The walls are a pasty white color, almost spotless. A chair, a desk, a white board and a couple magazines are the only items in the room.
She directs me to sit in the chair in the middle of the room while she takes a seat behind the polished desk. I watch as she pressed some keys on the keyboard sat on the edge of the desk connected to a computer with a large screen.
