Chapter Тhree
“Guess what, Liam?” I say brightly, ruffling his fluffy curls. His Labrador ears perk up, tail starting to wag. The young lad has dozing off on the couch all curled up but my voice has brought him out of his semi-conscious state.
“Wha’?” he asks. Aww, he is such a quick learner.
“We’re gonna to the park.”
“A p-park?” he forms the words carefully. “What park?”
“What is a park?” I correct him, the English major in me acting up.
“It’s an outdoor place where people go out to have fun,” I explain slowly.
“Fun?” he says with a woof.
“Fun,” I echo.
-
“Zay-een, what that?” Liam asks adorably for the twentieth time since we left my flat. He is so curious, much like a baby pup. And he looks so cute in my white full-sleeved shirt and dark jeans.
Right now, he is pointing at a raspberry shrub.
“Raspberries. They’re real sweet and a bit tangy too.”
“Tang-ee?”
“Here,” I pick off a raspberry and hold it in front of his nose. “Now what do you say?”
“Please? Thank you?”
“Anytime, Liam.” I place it in his mouth. He flicks his tongue out and licks at the tip of my fingers.
He giggles and I have to refrain myself from cooing. There is a random couple walking by me and when they see the pup ears perched in Liam’s honey brown curls, they grin.
“Aw, he’s so cute, is he your little brother?” the girl asks, holding out her hand for Liam to sniff. Liam twitched his nose at the new smells and grins, licking his nose in content.
“Er, sort of?” What am I and Liam? is he my adoptee?
“He is so fu—I mean, really cute.”
“Yeah, he is.”
After a few minutes of her cooing and impatient foot-tapping from her boyfriend, we part our ways and I take Liam’s hand. With his puppy-like personality, I wouldn’t be surprised if he followed the wrong bloke home. Who knows what they’ll do to this innocent lad.
It’s a gorgeous day, lovely for a walk in the park. I get ourselves a spot by a pine tree, so we can take regue in the shade if the sun becomes too much.
A couple minutes ago, I let Liam run along in the park because it’s a pretty open space and I live in a nice neighbourhood. Ish. I lay back and prop my head up with my hands, eyes shut tight. It feels like it has been ages since the last time I saw the sun. Naturally, I find myself humming a catchy song by Ed Sheeran, some song about getting plastered to feel loved?
“Zayn! Zayn!” Liam’s incessant yelling interspersed with excited barks.
“Yes, Liam?” I open my eyes lazily.
“What thi—what is this?” he catches himself.
I peer up at him. He has got the sun behind him, so it’s tough for me to see properly. After a minute, I make out the shape of a rose.
“It’s a rose, Liam.”
“A ro-ohs? What is a rose?”
“A rose is a flower. Where did you even find a rose in a park?”
