While You Were Gone [Liam Payne]

Chapter 1- Lunch

Ugh thank you God today is the last day before I graduate out of high school. I hate coming here. It's full of fake people. 

I'm glad one of my best friends, Ash, is picking me up today. She already graduated last week so she offered to get me. I glanced up at the clock to see it was 2:57. "Three more minutes," I thought to myself, "Then I'm free." We're doing usless crap in here since it was our last day. I felt my phone buzz in my jumper pocket and I quickly opened up my history book so I was able to hide the fact that I was texting from Mr. Wheeler. I unlocked the screen and saw that it was a text from Liam. A smile  slowly erupted onto my face giving me butterflies.

Liam: 

Hey love! I'll be home in time to see you gradute and celebrate your birthday(: Mind if me and the lads stay at your house for the time being? xxx

Me:

Course not! That's great! The boys can stay in the 2 guest bedrooms. Glad to see you're coming home Li. Miss you loads.

Liam:

Miss you too Katie-Cat. I'll see you tomorrow morning then love! Can't wait!(:

I read the text and rolled my eyes. Liam knows I've hated cats since practically birth, that's why he gave me the nick name Katie-Cat. He loved to tease me about it. He's lucky I love him as much as I do otherwise he'd get hit in the back of the head for calling me that. I slowly stuck my phone into my jumper pocket and put my history book into my purse. Two more minutes. God, I'm counting down the seconds at this point. I can slowly feel my blood sugar going lower because I've only eaten a granola bar all day. As a type one diabetic, I have to eat constantly and test my blood. Obviously I haven't really done that today. Ash said she'd take me out to a late lunch for graduation, so I didn't want to fill up.

The bell finally rang, and I sprinted out of the classroom only to see Ryan, my ex boyfriend of now three months. We had dated for almost a year. I despised him now due to the fact that when he was drunk at a party one night he had slapped me because I wouldn't sleep with him. That was the end of it. I would NOT let some guy lay a finger on me in anyway like that. Especially if it was because I didn't want to sleep with him. Not to mention he cheated on me... twice. Why I took him back is beyond me. I tried to avoid his gaze but failed.

"Hey baby, I miss you," he said slyly.

"Go away I don't wanna see your face. You disgust me Ryan," I shot back. He was surprised at my tone because I hardly ever get mad.

"I'm sorry about what I did to you a couple months ago Kate, I was being dumb. Please, I miss you." I knew he was lying. I saw it in his eyes.

"First and foremost, don't call me Kate. My name is Katie and only Katie. Second, you also cheated on me Ryan. Twice. I don't even know why I took you back the first time," I said as I pushed my finger into his chest. I turned on my heel and started walking away.

"Fine. Whatever, dumb bitch," He whispered a little too loudly. He thought I didn't hear him, but in all reality, I heard him loud and clearly.

I stopped in my dead in my tracks and turned. "Hey Ryan?" I said sweetly, and he turned and faced me. "Rot in hell you cold hearted son of a bitch!" As I said those words to him I turned on my heels and made my way out the door. As I made it to the parking lot I heard an entire crowd of "Ohhhhh's" coming from the students. I bit my lip trying to hide the smirk creeping up on my face. That felt good.

I walked a couple feet into the parking lot and heard Ash scream my name. I ran up to her and gave her the biggest hug possible. 

"Hey love! How's it feel knowing your finally done with this place?" Ash said with a smile as she held onto my shoulders looking around at the school.

"Oh my gosh it's the best feeling ever Ash. I have to tell you what I did to Ryan! But first, let's go to the restaurant. I'm starved!" She looked at me with her chocolate brown eyes.

"Oi so am I Katie. How's your blood sugar feeling?" she asked with slight concern in her voice. Ash always made sure I was okay. I loved her loads for that. "It's dropping, so we better get going!" I said and rushed to the pasenger side of her car. She followed into the drivers side and blasted the radio. Olly Murs' song "Heart Skips A Beat" was playing. We both belted out the lyrics and started laughing to the point of tears. I could totally be myself around her.

We pulled into the parking lot of our favorite little cafe. I practically ran into the restaurant with Ash trailing not too far behind. Lizz, our favorite waitress there, had pulled us into a hug the second we stepped foot into the cafe. 

"Girls! How are you? Haven't seen you in God knows how long!" She said to us smiling. 

"Too long Lizz! We miss you!" Ash told her. We started coming here shortly after we started working at Starbucks. So basically about a year now. I guess you could say we were regulars, but we haven't been here in about a month due to the fact that we were finishing up school.

"Here you go ladies," Lizz said enthusiastically as she led us to our favorite booth next to the window that was overlooking the town. I missed it here way too much. "The usuals?" She asked with a smile creeping onto her face. We both nodded quickly, and she set off to the kitchen.

"So," Ash said as she leaned onto the table, "What's this Ryan drama you were speaking of?"

"Well," I said with disgust in my voice, "I walked out of class today, and he was standing there looking as if he was waiting for me. He said a bunch of bullshit lies of how 'he missed me, and he was sorry'." Ash rolled her eyes at that and shifted in her seat. She never liked Ryan. I don't know why I didn't listen to her when she told me he was bad news. 

"Well, Katie, go on. I know you. You didn't sit there and take that What else happened?" She said with a smirk on her face.

"I told him to rot in hell, and he's a cold hearted son of a bitch." 

"I don't think I've ever been so proud of you!" Ash smiled widely.

"I feel pretty fucking good about it." I said. Ash started laughing which caused me to join in because her laugh is so contagious.

Lizz came up with a smile plastered on her face. "You guys seem to be having fun," she said as she placed down our drinks. "Diet coke for you, Katie, and a Sprite for you, Ash. I'll be right out with your food." I grabbed my Diet Coke and began chugging it.

"Damn, Katie! Slow down there tiger!" Ash said sarcastically as I smiled contently. She knew I loved soda; especially Diet Coke.  

"Oh my gosh, Ash! I almost forgot to tell you!" She looked at me and nodded slowly as if I were some crazy person. "Liam is coming back in town tomorrow morning!" I know I talked way too fast. She understood though, she's used to me talking really fast. I did that when I was excited. "Oh my gosh, Katie, that's great news! I'm so happy for you!" I smiled like a little kid. "You get to meet the boys now, Ash. Finally I can officially meet the rest of them too." I've only had short conversations with them while Liam and I were skyping. Ash truly looked happy for me. I'm so glad I met this girl.

Lizz brought out our food, and Ash immediately started to devour it. I shook my head and laughed to myself as I check my blood sugar, 83. I'd better start eating. My blood sugar is supposed to be between 90-130ish. I quickly imputed how many carbs I was eating into my pump, and it vibrated giving me the sign that it was giving me insulin. My pump allows me to take my insulin, so that I don't have to take it through a shot. As soon as I felt it vibrate I dug into my food as well. Ash and I sat in a comfortable silence as we ate. I smiled as I thought of Liam coming home tomorrow. "I finally get my best friend back," I whispered just loud enough for me and no one else to hear.
