Michael opened his eyes. He saw the whole crowd stare at him in amazement, trying to stagger towards him, yet he didn’t feel loved. He knew he had to find her to feel loved. It all began that fateful day when his father left him in that orphanage 20 years ago, at the age of seven. He shut his eyes trying to remember the horrible moments that made him the emotionless, cold person he was.
“Yes. This is my late sister’s child. She named him Michael Williams. You see, I have nowhere to leave him so I have no choice. Take good care of him. I only chose “Barden orphanage” as I know it is one of the best. Goodbye Michael. Please forgive me.”
Michael stared at his father, his inspiration, as he disowned him on the spot, denying him his son. At that point, Michael was filled to the brim with anger, hatred and spite for the man he once loved.
His hatred didn’t let him forget. For the next 3 years, he planned to escape. Hatred had turned a young boy into a cunning escape artist. Then on 7th September 1996, Michael Williams, a naive young boy escaped from the orphanage. He had nothing with him apart from his determination to achieve revenge.
Michael thought back to how he had become one of the world’s best businessmen. He had started off polishing shoes at the tender age of ten. Little by little, he started his own business. He was picked off the streets by a rich man who saw potential in him. He attended business meetings and had made models of shoes for his guardian. Thus, he became the world’s biggest footwear manufacturer. The process took him 10 years. He had then decided to find his father, for revenge.
Everyday, Michael searched. Finally, he had found him, but the outcome was something he wouldn’t have dreamed of. Michael, still in his trance had overcome with guilt as he remembered that just a few years ago, he saw his father lay on the bed, a living corpse. He still remembered his conversation with that doctor.
“Aah, Hank Williams. This man has been in a coma for 10 years, but he hasn’t died. It is like he has something to tell someone." He looked at me, squinting his eyes, then pursed his mouth. "Wait, are you his son? He told me to give you something if you came," exclaimed the doctor..
Michael read the letter. “To the most important person in my life, Michael. I am sorry. I had no choice but to leave you. You see the reason why I left was because I had blood cancer. I didn’t want you to see me die. One year before you were born was when I found out. They said it could be cured, so I carried on with life. However, I didn’t tell you your mother was pregnant with a beautiful baby girl at the time. Amelia was her name. After Amelia was born, six months later your mother was pregnant with you. That was when the doctor told me I only had a few years to live. Your mother, devastated said she wouldn’t let me go until you were born. So I stayed. Sarah died straight after giving birth to you. I was aggravated but when you were born, I couldn’t let you go. Since I was married, I wanted a baby boy. I had so many dreams. Amelia was special but you were too. I decided to give you and Amelia all the happiness I could in the short while I had left. I felt as if I was flying. Then, my health deteriorated and the doctor said I was close to my end. You called me your hero. I didn’t want to die in front of you. That’s when I abandoned you and Amelia. It was the hardest decision of my life. I thought it would be better if you hate me rather than cry all your childhood away. I wanted you to have the best life possible, even if it was to be without me. Just remember I never stopped loving you and you will always make me proud..."
Michael touched his cheek. He was crying, for the first time in his life. He thought he knew everything, could see through anyone, but deep down inside he was just a lost child waiting for some love. He couldn’t see his father’s pain, his innocence. The Doctor broke Michael’s thoughts.
"It’s true. That month your father fell unconscious and went into a coma. A few times he said your name and Amelia’s. He is one of the greatest people I know,” whispered the doctor.
Michael’s thoughts were interrupted that second when he heard a gasp. It had been 13 years but he still couldn’t forget his father’s voice.
“Michael….Michael…Is that you?” whispered Hank, his voice hoarse and weak.
A fanatic scream from a clumsy man wearing geeky glasses disrupted Michael from his thoughts. “Uncle Terry?” Michael asked in disbelief. Just then he saw a man stride through the crowds, not caring when people shot him death glares. His eyes were bold and his face was intimidating despite it ageing. However, his expressions were soft. “Dad!” exclaimed Michael happily. All of a sudden, people shooting Hank death glares looked at him in respect and awe.
Later that evening, Michael studied his award that was professionally shaped as a trainer. He had invented self cleaning shoes that only needed air. Michael couldn’t care less about the trophy. He was going to meet his sister the next day! After seven years of hiring private detectives, searching through countless census records and worrying himself to sleep, he had finally found Amelia.
