I pushed myself through the crowd and saw the scene that made my heart completely stop in its beats. Gina looked down at me with her mouth slightly hanging down, then her hand gently rested itself on my shoulder in comfort. It didn't help though. My eyes were glued to the scene. I couldn't believe him of all people were here... fighting with Maxel. Jax was trying to pry his twin brother away from him, but to no avail, Maxel was not getting away.
"What... What the fuck is he doing back here?" I swear I almost choked as I spoke out loud, specifically to no one. Maybe I was hoping he would be the one to answer. Gina shook her head as if she was the one to answer, but deep down neither of us knew why him of all people would return.
Skin making harsh contact with skin was the only sound that I was hearing, other than the crowd cheering for his name. Why would they cheer for him? Why not cheer for Maxel? I thought to myself.
"Hey! Come on, get off each other!" The principal, Mr. Burnworth, fussed at the two as he shoved them away from each other. One hand was on Maxel's chest, the other was on his. He looked between the both of them and then finally set his eyes on the boy who I hated with a full passion. "Was it you, Derek? You decide to finally come back and you start a fight with one of the new students?"
Derek huffed out a long sigh and looked at our principal with a smug grin. That grin could make anyone do what Derek wants. Even with a busted lip and a bloody nose he managed to still look handsome. "Mr. Burnworth, if I may correct you, this new kid actually started the fight. He punched me in my mouth and all I did was defend myself."
I looked Derek up and down to see if I could still tell if he was lying. His hands were stuffed inside his pockets. His fingers usually started moving really fast, as if he was playing the piano, when he was telling a lie.
"Stop fucking lying!" Maxel suddenly shouted at Derek. Blood was streaming from his mouth as he shouted. "You know you started it!"
Derek cocked his head to the side slightly like a puppy who didn't understand any commands. His eyebrows furrowed together in mock confusion.
Mr. Burnworth shook his head and finally gave up with the two boys. He took his hands away and told the boys, "Both of you, in my office now. We will discuss this in a private sector."
Maxel sighed and let his head sink down as he followed the principal. Derek smirked, showing a few of his teeth, but reluctantly followed. I watched as the two of them were lead into the main building and then disappeared behind the closed doors. I never hoped so badly that Derek would get suspended until this moment. I did not want him even near me, much less at the same school.
"Why the hell is he back?" Gina exclaimed. Her voice knocked me out of my trance and made me come back to the reality I didn't want anymore.
"I- I don't know..." I muttered under my shaking breath while I watched the crowd break apart. How could they just act like this was some reality TV show and walk away like it was nothing but entertainment? I thought to myself.
Gina sighed, then grabbed my arm gently and started to walk me away from the crime scene. It felt as if my feet had lost their motion, like they had forgotten how to work. My nerves were too shot for me to try to lift my feet for every step I took, making me drag my feet along the walkway.
"Brin, you have to walk," Gina said as she stopped us at our usual hangout spot. She let go of my arm and forced me to lean against the wall. The brick wall was the only support I had; if I wasn't leaning against the wall, I was sure that I would have fell and melted like a puddle. It even felt like all the muscles and bones in my body had turned into jelly. Going to my first hour would feel as if it was the longest trip I had taken in my life, and Calculus AP was the one class I needed to be on time for.
"So Brinley Carter's old boy toy is back!" A snobby voice exclaimed that snapped my head up quickly. Laina Victors stood right in front of me with her two groupies. I immediately felt steam coming out of my ears when I saw her smirking with her hand on her hip.
"And he was fighting with her new boy toy?" Paige Ashwood pretended to pout, as if it was a tragic occurrence. Her fake pout quickly turned into a smirk similar to Laina's, except without the perfect white teeth. "Tsk tsk... Do they even know that they were and are both boy toys to you, Brinley?"
"Maybe that's what they were fighting about!" The other groupie, Val Turner, 'whispered.'
Val wouldn't know the definition of 'whisper' even if it hit her upside her head. She was never the smartest of their little group. And if I ever had to decide who was the smartest, I honestly would choose Laina.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Gina clenching her fists. It was time for me to speak up; there was no need for another fight this morning. I glared specifically at Laina and spat, "Why don't you three actually go do something that doesn't involve disturbing other people? Go fuck the whole football team! Or even give the baseball team some blowjobs!"
I did not know what had gotten into me, but all I felt was fire working itself inside me. And watching all three of their smug faces change quickly to shock made it all feel much better. Laina huffed held her chin up high as if what I said was a complete lie. Paige and Val stood there with their mouths hanging down in shock. The three of them quickly gained their composure and strutted away in their high heels.
A long-held breath finally let itself out once they were out of sight. I could not believe all of that had come out of my mouth. But it felt like I had just gotten the air knocked out of me. Gina looked down at me from her tall frame with her eyebrows raised in surprise. Hell, I was surprised myself.
"Maybe we should get a head start at going to Calculus?" She suggested even though she already started to walk to the Math building.
I looked back at the main building to see if, by chance, Derek or Maxel had walked out. Mainly I was hoping for Maxel to walk out. The doors were being avoided. I even looked around for Jax, but he wasn't around anymore, which sprung me into confusion.
"Yeah..." I mumbled and turned around towards her. I trailed behind her inside the Math building to go to Calculus. Somehow, I knew that just having him show up this morning made it one of the worst days of my life. Derek Hunter had always managed to make a day one of the worst just by appearing anywhere, one of his many talents since our occurrences.
