“Finally.” I breathed out while pitting my cases into the file cabinet. They were so many homicide cases in Birmingham, Alabama it’s ridiculous. The hardest part about being a white detective in Birmingham is that people take you as a joke. But that was all over now…well for today.
“Mr.Kyles, there’s been another shooting on 4th and Maine. Would you like to take this one?” Marianne the receptionist asked.
“Oh, I was just heading out.” I pitied.
“I know but the criminals are still out.” Marianne spoke
“You think you could give this one to Jackson?” I pleaded while putting on my suit jacket.
“I guess, I’ll see what he says. Have a goodnight Mr. Kyles.” She says while closing my office door.
“I only have three years seniority here, everyone thinks I’m a super hero for some uncanny reason. I’m flattered and all but geez people give me a break. I just want to go home.” I thought.
I walked out of my office and stepped into the lobby. The lobby for the Homicide department was amazing. There was black and white everywhere, the carpet was white while the sofa was black. The walls were contrasting colors. It gave a sense of life, like everything’s not always white as in happy sometimes in black as in sad. I don’t know if they were thinking like that when they made the room. But it sure does make the Victims family members feel a lot better. It was so chic and nice. The elevator caught my attention and welcomed me in. I pressed the garage button and I was on my way to my car.
“Ding!” the elevator alarmed.
I walked out and tried to find my 2014 Chrysler 300, when I spotted it I smiled. While walking to my car I saw something unusual. It was a black ball right next to the tire. I looked around the garage there was just cars no people. This suspicious looking thing next to my car gave me the shivers and startled me. Then all of a sudden I heard sniffling. It had a mysterious rhythm to it.
“Sniff, Sniff, Sniff, Sniff”
This was really creeping me out. As I grew closer to the sound and mysterious shape I felt drips of sweat pouring off my forehead like rain. I hit my unlock button on the car key. The mysterious shape shook. I jumped. The mysterious shape unraveled. It was a person, a person, a lady an African American lady for goodness sakes.
“Ma’am, this is my car! You scared me half to death!” I managed to say panting extremely loud.
“I’m so sorry! My…my no good husband threw me out the car. I landed here and I couldn’t move. I was too afraid.” The lady said while standing up
I locked my eyes onto her. She was beautiful. Her eyes were amazing they stood out. Her hair was frizzy but it was pretty. Plus she had the body of an Victoria Secret model. I noticed that she moved uncomfortably. I guess she could feel me checking her out. I coughed to try to hide my embarrassment.
”Ma’am, are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?” I question her.
“No, no sir. I’m not the hurt.” She replied.
“Oh okay that’s good, well um.” I stopped. I didn’t know what to say. “Do you have a family member that could pick you up? You can use my cell phone to give them a call?” I questioned her yet again.
“Um…I wish I had family here but I don’t. My husband and I were taking a road trip to California. We’re or well I’m originally from New York.” She struggled to say rubbing her arms as if she was cold.
“Ah so that explains that voice. Ahahaha do you want me to drop you off at a hotel? Do you have any money on you?” I asked her.
“ Nope, no money. I don’t even know this city or even this state. I’m the least familiar with it.”
“Well, you don’t seem like a criminal…I guess you can stay at my place, if you would like.”
“Oh, isn’t that kind of looked down on?”
“Isn’t what looked down on?”
“A black lady you know with a white man?”
“Um I don’t believe so? If it is that really ignorant.”
“Yes, yes it is. Well if you don’t mind I would love to stay at yours.”
“Alright, lets’ go.”
