I woke up to my parents bursting into my room singing happy birthday carrying balloons and cake. Seriously who wants cake at six in the morning on a school day. The first school day of the year after summer in fact, the joy of a September birthday.
"Wakie wakie Amira, 17 today!" Mum screeched after her splendid version of happy birthday (not).
"And you need to be up for school, you've had enough time off" dad always the practical one said whilst bending over my bed to give me a kiss on the cheek and a ruffle of my already horrendous bed head.
"Thanks guys I'll be up in a minute" I needed to ready for school so promptly kicked them out of my room to figure out what I was going to wear. I finally decided on black jeans with a white blouse and biker boots both practical and comfy as well as boring enough not to draw attention to myself especially on my birthday.

I got ready at a faster rate then usual and made it down stairs in time for my mum's 'famous' pancakes ( famous in the family that is ).
"Oh Amira you look lovely today, how many would you like ?" Mum said as I was downstairs. I could tell she had made my favourite raspberry and chocolate ones.
"Just 2 please. I'm still a bit tired, waking up this early again is difficult after 6 weeks off"
"Okay dear just don't be late and you'll be fine!" Mum said whilst piling the pancakes on my plate. Ever since I can remember my mum has always made pancakes on my birthday and always gives me the same amount of presents as my age. I think she just tries to compensate for the fact I'm an only child after being told they could never have children really made them start to spoil me as I've gotten older even though I don't ask for much from them.

After scoffing the delicious pancakes I made my way outside to my black Ford Focus after swiping my keys off the counter on my way out. My drive to school isn't that long if you know the short cut round the back but takes 30 minutes to walk so I always take my car as it's easy to carry my things in as well. The area we live in doesn't seem that exciting at first glance, in fact it looks like any normal city with people busting about and shopping malls galore but there is something majorly different kept hidden from the humans. The city of Rosenquill is mainly run by werewolves. Yes that's right werewolves, people that seem human but with an inner wolf (similar to a conscience) whom they can shift into at will. Our pack is called the Polnoc clan otherwise known as the midnight clan we share borders with two other clans the starlight and dark moon clans who are our main allies. The clan is one of the biggest with 300 werewolves roughly and 200 humans, we even have a small amount of vampires downtown. My father is the delta of the clan or third in command after the alpha and beta. My mother is also a werewolf but not a ranking one meaning I am also one but have yet to see my wolf. All pups are supposed to start hearing their wolf at 10 and shifting at 15 but I seem to be an exception. Parents and doctors tell me not to despair as it will happen eventually that I'm just a late bloomer but I don't think I will ever have one. For all intents and purposes I am human (I even smell like one apparently) making me the omega of the clan. The weakest member but I don't complain, I shouldn't be a member at all since I can't shift.

However, the students at school do and that's why I'm dreading today as I pull into a space outside the gates. "Rosenquill grammar school" educates both humans and werewolves so no one knows who's who, we all just treat each other as equals, well except me I always seem to be singled out even when I try my hardest to blend in. The building is an old Victorian style on the outside to look like a castle but modern white walls and red lockers on the inside to keep to tradition and the look of the town.

"Heyyy 17 today Ami!" Melanie screamed as I got out of my car. Melanie is my best friend, since year 7 we have been joined at the hip. It's an unlikely pairing I suppose since she's out going and popular, skinny, blonde and flirty but this means she distracts everyone from my boring flat brown hair and average height.
"Hey girls do you know what this means Ami?!" Tyler my other best friend said whilst catching up with us walking into school.
"Ty can you not please, it's not going to happen I'm not even a real werewolf" he's talking about mates. Werewolves have another wolf created for them by the gods, literally the other half of their soul without them we grow weak and can die. All werewolves find their mate after they turn 17 usually on the same day but I can't see that happening to me if I don't have a wolf I can't be someone's other half and to be honest I don't want one. I prefer to be left alone not rely on someone els to survive and be happy, they will just leave and let you down.
"Come on Ami don't be like that, of course you have a mate and you are a werewolf!" Ty said before walking away to his form after giving us a thumbs up and a wink.
"He's right you know so you don't feel down about it just let things happen on their own, you will shift one day and you will find your mate soon" Melanie said after Ty left. We share the same classes so I wasn't going to hear the end of it unless I gave up and admitted that I have a wolf, it's the same thing every week with us.
"Yeah yeah yeah I have a mate, happy now?"
"No! You also need to smile and open your present, here " Melanie handed me a little box wrapped in happy birthday paper. I opened it quickly and found these cute blue ear rings in the shape of stars.
"Thanks Mel I love them" I said whilst putting them on. I think I remember seeing a similar pair during summer when we both went to Italy for a week.
"You're welcome! They're the ones from Italy but I got them in your birth stone!" She proceeded to tell me all about what they would go with and how well they caught the light, I had no real clue what she was saying as fashion really isn't my thing it's hers, you can tell that just from looking at her with her waves of blonde hair, black skinny jeans and a purple peplum top with matching high heels she's a killer.
"Well I'll see you at lunch Ami, I have an appointment" she said walking away backwards with a wink before turning around to meet up with a guy round the back of the gym like she does every Tuesday and second Monday.

Since it was just my left I went to class heading for my desk at the back of the room when I was suddenly on my bum with my books everywhere and the sound of laughter. Serena. She has made it her goal to torment me everyday. She looks down at me smirking.
"Run along Amira no one wants you here" she says to my back as I quickly take my seat as far away from her as possible.
"Good morning class, I believe today is someone's special day!" I groaned, why did Ms. Crawly have to do that in front of everyone. Today is going to be a long day.

I met up with Tyler and Melanie for lunch out on the bleachers in our usual spot underneath them but still in the sun.
"Hey guys any room for little ol me?" I asked sitting down crossed legged next to Mel.
"Oh of course birthday girl!" Tyler greeted without even pausing from eating his turkey sandwich.
"So... Any sign of him?" Mel looked at me expectantly. Of course she would bring that up after only just talking about my non existent mate this morning.
"No Mel he must be dead or something" I joked since denying his existence got me no where with these two.
"It'll happen just you wait" Mel said giving my knee a reassuring squeeze.
"So are we partying like there's no tomorrow on Friday to celebrate?" Tyler asked whilst starting his fifth sandwich.
"Yeah! Good idea Ty lets go out, come on Ami"
"Fine! Okay Friday it is but I'm not getting drunk my parents would kill me" I finally admitted, my parents don't actually know I drink but Melanie knows all the right people to get us in the only club in town ( I don't want to know how) .
