*Chapter 1*

Bentley P.O.V

I can feel the rhythm pick up beneath my finger tips, the flow of the beat gradually speeds up. I cast a glance at Lush, as her fingers speed against the keyboard’s keys, ever now and then she’ll belt out a lyric into the microphone across from her. I smile, looking down at my hands as they move across the drums, every now and then a symbol chiming in. I don’t need to think about what I’m doing, I just let the rhythm find its way through my hands.

I immediately slow down my pace and result to the familiar bang of the drum every second. Mike, our lead guitarist, slows down as well as Jimmy on the bass. I keep my drumming steady as I watch Luke whisper the last line of the song, the keyboard following slowly with the melody.

Luke turns around and grins at us, his black hair flopping into his grey eyes. “Nice practice guys.”

We all mumble something as we start to put our instruments away. I shove my drum sticks in my pockets and start to detach all of the drums. I’m always the last one to pack up since I have to do more work than the others, but Lush always helps me. She walks over to me, her keyboard already in its case.

“Need help with that?” She smiled.

I looked up at her, nodding. “Please.”

She smiles, her blue eyes glistening as she helps me roll the drums into their individual cases. Her pink hair flies all over the place as we jump up and down, trying to get the snare in its case properly. Before I can even think she’s pushed the case at me and I’ve tripped over another drum, making me roll across it and fall onto the floor. She laughs at me, her hand going to her mouth.

“Oh my god, I’m so sorry. I’m such a retard!” She gasped.

“You’re not a retard.” I rolled my eyes, standing up.

She ignored me though and helped me carry my drums to the band car. We pile each one in carefully before she chucks her keyboard in there, quite heavily. I raise my eyebrows at her and she just shrugs.

“It was heavy and I want a new one.” She pouted.

I laughed at her. “Get a new one then.”

She mumbled something I couldn’t understand but I shrugged it off, not wanting to bother her. She looks up at me, a frown on her face.

            “What?” I asked.

“You gotta go home now.” She pouted.

“Yeah, so do you.” I smirked.

“But your mum is there.” She glared at the floor.

“I know, but I gotta face it one way or another.” I sighed.

My mum, geez I don’t even think I want to call her that anymore. Ever since my twin sister, Bronti, and my dad were murdered last year mum’s started drinking and taking drugs and if either me or my little sister, Tori, get in her way she’ll use force and our own words will be turned against us.

She pulls me into a hug. “Good luck.”

I wrap my arms around her shoulders. “Yeah, yeah.”

She pulls away. “See ya, Booty.”

I can’t help but grin. “Bye, Lush.”

I turn around, making sure I pick up my skateboard, before heading home. I prepare myself for the wrath of my mother who’s probably waiting in the living room.

****

I make sure my skateboard is behind my back as I walk into the house quietly. The living room is a mess even though I tidied it before I left this morning whilst mum was passed out in the kitchen. She hears me close the door and is immediately stood in front of me, her blonde hair messed up, her brown eyes heavy.

“What time do you call this?” She slurred.

            “Eight o’clock.” I said, calmly.

            “You’re late!” She shouted.

“By about ten seconds!” I argued.

A sharp sting of pain is thrown against my cheek as my mum slaps me. I hiss and glare at her, what have I done!? I see Tori start to descend the stairs from behind mum. I open my eyes wide and shake my head at her. She pleads with her eyes, rubbing her stomach to tell me she’s hungry. I internally groan and mime that I’ll stall mum. She nods at me before quietly running towards the kitchen on my left.

I glare down at mum, my height giving me favours. “I am perfectly on time.”

“No you are not!” She screamed, sending another hit to my face.

I spit out the blood that forms on my lower lip. “Yes I am!”

“Shut up! Don’t make me hit you!” She shouted.

            “You just did!” I roared.

Another whack against my cheek and I’m thrown to the floor. I wince, closing my eyes in pain. She kicks me in the side, roughly before marching back into the living room and downing a bottle of beer. She sways before collapsing on the ground.

I get up, a groan escaping my lips as I do so. I make my way into the kitchen, my skateboard at my side. I see Tori running around the kitchen as she puts toast into the toaster. She looks up at me and smiles before doing another take and gasping. Her newly dyed brown hair falls over her pale green eyes as she stares at the blood on my face.

“She got you again?” She whispered.

I nodded. “Just get upstairs, quickly.”

She nodded in return and runs up the stairs, toast in hand. I grab the other slice and follow behind her. I go into the bathroom and examine my face. My emerald green eyes are worn out, my skin pale. My lower lip has a gash across it, blood seeping out and dripping down my chin. I curse before getting some tissue and wiping it up. I ruffle my chocolate coloured hair, sorting it out before sighing and leaving the bathroom. I collapse on my bed and before I know it, I’m asleep.
