Set 4 months before Eiko was diagnosed with her illness (8 months before she dies)
I watched Eiko shift the presents in her arms and bury her face in her scarf as she continued down the road. It was the scarf I had gotten her for her birthday, she wore it practically everywhere and was strangely obsessed with it.
The road was dusted with a thin layer of snow which crunched under her feet and littered the roof tops. Winter was her favourite season. I knew that because she always said she loves the beauty of complexity hidden within simplicity. I still don't understand what that really means but I just accepted it.
I watched her look at the scenery happily as she passed right by my house where I was waiting for her.
"I see you're spacing out as usual." I called out to her
She finally looked behind her to see me leaning in the door way of my house. She really needs to stop doing that.
Eiko span on her heels and walked back towards me whilst I smiled smugly at her.
"Why are you outside?" She questioned
"I knew that you'd end up at the end of the road before realising you're not at the right place. You should be grateful."
"Well by waiting outside in the cold, you will get sick and make me look after you so I'm not grateful!" She muttered as she passed me and came into my home. I shut the door after her and followed her into the living room.
She dropped the presents she had brung under the tree we had decorated together before turning to me with a big grin on her face.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS!"
She tackled me in a hug almost knocking me off my feet.
"Give me a heads up next time." I mumbled before dropping her.
"But that would take away all the fun!" She said as she unwrapped her scarf and held it gently in her hands.
"You're really attached to that scarf aren't you."
"Of course I am! You got it for me."
I never expected her to take it so seriously. I picked out the most ugly scarf I could find and hid her real present inside it as a joke but she accepted both presents graciously.
"Speaking of this scarf..." She said as she picked up one of the neatly wrapped presents she had bought and handed it to me. "I thought you would like one yourself."
I tore away the wrapping to reveal the same putrid vomit coloured scarf with gross shades of yellow and green spots on it.
"You shouldn't have." I muttered sarcastically.
She took the scarf from my hand and wrapped it around my neck before pulling on it so my face was closer to hers.
"You look great." She whispered before she kissed me.
"Aomine wake up!"
I opened my eyes to see Momoi leaning over me with a bright smile on her face.
"Merry Christmas! I let myself in since you wouldn't open the door and...are you crying?"
I wiped at my eyes to find I had been crying. I didn't know why though. I was having a really good dream even though I couldn't remember what it was.
"Did you have a nightmare or something?" Momoi asked me as she sat at the end of my bed.
"I don't think so. All I remember is a scarf.
It sounded stupid now that I was saying it allowed but I felt a pang in my heart when I couldn't remember the face of the girl wearing it.
I could remember her warmth and her love and the familiar sensation of being around her but I couldn't remember who she was.
I think that's why I was crying. I had lost someone important.
"Are you talking about that scarf?"
She pointed to the same ugly scarf from my dream that was now sticking out from under the bed.
"It's such an ugly colour." Momoi pointed out as she picked it up. "I didn't think this was your taste."
"It was a gift from... someone I knew."
This is really short but I really felt like writing it so yeah. Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you stay safe and happy during the holidays!
