Chapter 17
Ellie
"I thought maybe we could hang out sometime. Like...tomorrow?" Deacon's mouth curled up when he spoke, and that trait set my nerves on fire. I couldn't stop looking at the twinkle in his blue eyes or the freckles on his nose. "Uh...Ellie?" Apparently, I had been admiring them for too long.
"Tomorrow?" I could feel my heart sinking as my mind dove into reality. Marked clearly on the calender at home was the date of the Montgomery's visit. Friday. Tomorrow. "I'm so sorry. I can't."
Deacon's expression changed from eager to devastated in an instant. "No. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have just come over here like this and put you on the spot in the middle of the hallway."
"Actually, I think you're pretty brave for doing that." I barely even noticed the rest of the people around when he was near. "And it's not that I don't want to...hang out sometime. I'll just have to do a rain check."
At that exact moment, a crash of thunder echoed through the sky. I jumped slightly, but relaxed when he placed a hand on my shoulder. "Rain check." He laughed.
I glanced out the nearest window and laughed, too. Rain was still pouring outside. "So, we're on indefinitely?" I asked.
Deacon seemed pleased, allowing himself a smile. "Sounds perfect."
"Great." I beamed as the bell rang. It was time for third hour already. I felt as though I'd been talking to Deacon for hours.
"I'll talk to you later, Ellie." Deacon peeled away, heading back to Trevor and Wes, who'd been watching us dutifully.
Ugh. Why did the Montgomerys have to visit Friday?
The rest of the week remained rainy, and sixth period on Friday afternoon the power went out, leaving us to rely on the windows for light. It was exciting at first, fumbling around in the semi-darkness, but by the beginning of seventh hour I was ready to go home.
Deacon and I didn't talk much for the remainder of the week, either. We'd shoot each other smiles during class and wave in the hallway, but there wasn't much left to say. We knew how we felt about each other, now we just had to wait for the right time to go out on a date.
As I hopped on the bus, heading home and destined for my closet to find something nice to wear for the Montgomery's visit, I couldn't help but be excited.
I was going on a date with Deacon Knight.
Indefinitely.
