James was furious. He was furious that he lost the date that he has been waiting for since he was thirteen because of the teacher he was crushing on.

James entered Mcgonagall's office and sat right in front of Mcgonagall. Mcgonagall found this very intimidating.

"Mr. Potter." She acknowledged him with curious amusement.

"Mini." His said stiffly, throwing his bag carelessly on the table nearby.

Mcgonagall blushed and said
"I want you to write 100 times 'I will not speak while the teacher is teaching.'" She said and started correcting homework.

I will not speak while the teacher is cheating. James wrote and suddenly noticed his mistake and corrected it.

"J.P. + M.M. Forever?" Mcgonagall reads from James's homework.

James' head suddenly directed his gaze on his Professor who he liked even before he liked Lily.

"Mr. Potter, what is the meaning of this?!" Mcgonagall shouts.

James looked at Mcgonagall dumbstruck.

Mcgonagall was bursting with fury, embarrassment and a little bit hope.

"Dumbledore's office! NOW!" She bellowed.

--x--x--x--x--

"Professor Dumbledore! This- this imbecile better be given punishment for-for-"

"For expressing his love?" Dumbledore cuts her off.

"Love? F-for...whom!?" Minerva demanded.

"You know very well who." Dumbledore replied slyly.

Minerva turned white. Seeing her face, James thought of the first girl whose initials were M.M.

"M.M. stands for Mary McDonald!" James blurted out, remembering Sirius mention the name on the first day of school.

"Mary McDonald?" Dumbledore frowned.

"Yes." He said determined.

"The first year?" Dumbledore asked, still frowning.

"Ye-Wait, what?" James remembered Sirius saying that he welcomed the girl to Hogwarts with a prank on the first day.

James had to think of something. Fast.
"No, I meant that- uhh- muggle teenage pop star. One of the twins. Marykate!"

"Olsen?" Dumbledore asked, the twinkle in his eye shining brighter than ever.

Damn! Was that her last name? Popstars these days...can't have a proper last name like McGonagall. James cursed out a few times.

"Really? Her name is Olsen? Well, I thought it was Mcdonald." James smiled innocently at Dumbledore.

"Hmm...got to change that then." James waved his wand at the paper.

Nothing happened.

Dumbledore chuckled and earned a glare from both James and Mcgonagall.

Clearing his throat, James waved the wand expectantly at the paper.

Still no change.

Mcgonagall spoke up. "Let me, Potter. You were never good at transfiguration."

With a simple incantation and another wave, Mcgonagall tried to change the letter M to O.

But nothing happened.

Dumbledore just laughed harder while James and Mcgonagall stared hard at the piece of paper.

James picked up the paper and tore it into half. Mcgonagall could feel a part of her heart tear too.

"The muggle way's the best way, as Lily would say." James muttered.

"Professor?" Dumbledore looked at a silent Mcgonagall.

"Hmm?" She answered in a subdued voice.

"Is everything alright, Professor?"

"Hmm." She muttered and left the room without another word.

James couldn't help but feel like going to console her. And he would have done so too, if Dumbledore had not just spoken.

"I guess, you will be heading back to your quarters now that your detention is cut short?" Dumbledore's blue eyes bore deep into James's.

"Hmm." James automatically answered.

"Have a good night then." The door magically opened for James and before he knew it, he was in front of the Fat Lady, still dazed about what happened.

"Password?"

"Hmm."

"Hmm?"

"Hmm."

"Ahem hem. Do you want to get in or not, Potter?" The Fat Lady had had the worst day with Peeves pouring paint all over her new white dress and she just wouldn't accept more nonsense.

"Hmm."

At that exact moment, before a furious Fat Lady was going to come out of her potrait and pour paint down James' throat, the portrait opened from the inside and Lily walked out to find James.

"Potter!" Lily exclaimed.

That being one of the few voices James would also hear, James looked up immediately at Lily.

"Lily!"

Lily's smile faltered. She had come out looking for James, wondering about the date he had promised her an hour back.

When James didn't arrive at the designated place, Lily couldn't help but tell herself that he was no good for her in the first place and so, no more dates with Potter.

With these thoughts, Lily's smile turned to a stern expression and she walked away.

Usually James' heart would skip a beat when Lily did anything. But this time...it didn't.
