"I made breakfast for you, dear." A frail voice sounded from the doorway of the room I slept in. I moaned a thanks, as I smelt bacon and eggs wafting through the doorway. The voice laughed and then waddled down to the kitchen to continue preparing breakfast.

I jumped out of bed and changed out of my tatty old pj's and put on some black jeans and a shirt. I brushed my hair and put on my combat boots and went downstairs to eat my breakfast.

It'd been three days since I met Ingrid, who owns the house I had snuck into, and she's been nothing but polite and understanding to me when I showed up and asked her if I could stay with her. She made me food, she cleaned me up, lent me clothes and even let me watch tv with her!

But I knew I had to go back, before I put Ingrid in any more danger from Him.

We ate in silence, both knowing the inevitable ending of today.

After breakfast, I retreated to my room and started packing my things again. Neither of us had said a word to each other, until I was zipping my bag up.

"You're welcome back anytime, dear. Don't ever think you have nowhere to go, even if those you surround yourself try to convince you otherwise." She hugged me briefly and then she watched me walk back down the road.

I walked through the door frame that used to support a door, seeing the door on the front porch, smashed into large pieces of splintered wood. I never knew I'd have more in common with a door than with people.

I heard the impact before I felt it. I also heard my body fall to the floor, lifeless, before I knew what was happening. Just before passing out, I saw the baseball bat slip out of his fingers and fall noisily onto the hallway floor.
