As every high school student knows, the day you get your exam results back is always the worse. If you made anything below a B, it would probably be safer to live on the streets until you died than it would be to go home and live with the shame of failing an exam.
Jackson Wang , one of the top five students, was no exception to this, especially when it came to the English exams.
He had studied for it until the circles underneath his eyes became midnight black. All he did was study for it, and when he saw the grade he made on the exam, he was pissed.Currently he was sitting at the dinner table, chewing on a piece of chicken while watching his sister spill rice all over her outfit.
"Jackson," the warm voice of his mother snapped him out of his daze, "you studied so hard on your English, but why did you make such a low grade?"
The tired student just shrugged his shoulders. Why should he care anymore? His efforts obviously weren't good enough, and it's not like he could retake the test.
"Jack jack did bad! Jack jack did bad!" His little sister chanted, throwing grains of rice all over the table.
His father chuckled at her chanting, and then gave Jackson a small smile. His father had always been proud of his son; like any dad should be. Mr. Wang always pushed his son to do his best, and even when Jackson didn't do well he always told him that there was another opportunity to become better. Therefor Mr. Wang did not stress over his son's grades, unlike his wife. In fact, Mr. Wang cared more about his son's skills in fencing, and hoped that one day his son would win an Olympic gold medal for Hong Kong."Don't just shrug your shoulders like that! Did you fall asleep during the test? Did you just forget? Maybe it's time you find an American friend!" His mother yelled, while standing up to throw away the exam results.
The boy just scoffed and said mockingly,
"An internet friend? Isn't that elementary school stuff?"His mother did not like the way her son responded to her suggestion, so she flashed him a glare that would make any teenage boy pee his pants. However Jackson was used to it by now, so he just smirked to himself when she thought it would be effective in making him lose the attitude.
"Mrs. Huang's son has a few friends from America. He practices English with them everyday. It's some app called HelloTalk and I think you should get it. It would help tremendously. Plus if you do go to America, you can stay with them!"
Jackson stood up and put the rest of his kimchi in the fridge. He turned back to face his mother and said with a grin on his face,
"I'll think about it."---
1 notificationTuan Yi Eun (Mark for short), rolled over to look at his phone that lit up from a notification from his favorite app, HelloTalk. The time on the clock said it was 6:45 in the morning. The boy grabbed his phone and unlocked it to check the message. The app came up on his screen to show a blue chat room with a user named, Jackjack_69.
Mark clicked on his profile to see that his picture was of a boy, most likely himself, and his biography said something like,
"My mother made me get this app because my English sucks. Please help me. Oh and I'm really funny and hot. Girls hmu."
It was ironic though because that part was in Chinese, and no English speaker would be able to help him.
Mark clicked the back button to see that this mysterious Jackson had sent him two more messages.
(Jackson is in bold, and Mark is normal.)
Hi.You are Chinese American??
I need help.
I'm actually just American, but my ethnicity is Chinese.
my English bad. Mom will kill me!! She's crazy!
Oh that's bad. I'll help you if you mind sharing your school life with me.
I will try! I have to go now. Please message me letter! ~
I will haha
Mark laughed and rolled back over into his bed. This guy was going to be a really weird and great friend.
